New gardening experiment: took a few cuttings from the fig tree my wife grew up under (the house will be sold soon) and will try to get them grow roots in water. Wish them good luck! The parent tree is very healthy, thriving in a tiny front yard, packed with fruit, I have high hopes for success.

Went to walk Mellie and dropped some compost in the bin by the park next door.
To my surprise, someone had cut up a gorgeous plant and dropped it in the compost bin.
Couldn't let it go to waste like that, so picked up a few and brought them home.
Put some in a pot with compost, Coco peat and vermiculite hoping they will root.
Don't know what to do with these remaining 2.
Maybe just shove them in one of the planters and see if it survives.

#UnityME - #MOFGA #SeedSwap & #ScionExchange 2026
March 29, 2026 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
MOFGA’s Education Center
294 Crosby Brook Rd
Unity, ME 04988 United StatesLet us know you're coming!
* In the event of severe weather, the Seed Swap & Scion Exchange will be postponed to the following Sunday, April 5 from 12-4 pm.
"Gardeners and orchardists are invited to bring their #seeds, #scionwood and #cuttings to share. If you don’t have any, come anyway! There is always plenty of seeds and scion to go around.
If you’ve been to the event before, you know that space can get tight at the start of the event. We encourage folks to join the event later in the day — we promise, there are still plenty of seeds and scions available over the duration of the event!
Community members and local seed #growers regularly bring an incredible variety of #vegetable, #fruit, #flower, and #herb seeds. We also regularly have over 150+ types of scionwood to share, including scionwood sourced from MOFGA’s orchards. We will also have limited quantities of #rootstock for sale. Custom #grafting is available by donation to the #MaineHeritageOrchard.
Other items for sharing are welcome such as plants, cuttings, #seedlings, hatching eggs, #kombucha and #YogurtStarters, #salves and other homemade items.
The day’s offerings also include #gardening and #orcharding workshops and demonstrations. Our full list of educational offerings for the day is coming soon!"

The strange tale of Sigmund Freud’s #begonia. Corinne’s begonia had grown from a cutting of a plant grown from one given to her by the actor Sally Miles in the 1970s. Sally’s had started life as a cutting she was given by the opera singer Kirsten Flagstad in the 50s. And Kirsten had been given her cutting in the 30s by her dear friend … #SigmundFreud. #plants #gardeners #history #cuttings #plants https://observer.co.uk/news/first-person/article/emma-freud-sigmund-freuds-begonia #gardeners #houseplants #begonias

I took these #cuttings in late summer, but unfortunately did not note what they were from. I would guess they are #Crataegus, but I am surprised by the size of the leaves and the absence of thorns. Something from the edge of the forest/wild hedges, eastern France. Native species are C. monogyna, C. laevigata, C. rhipidophylla etc.
Can it be a crataegus? (More in alt texts. I don't need the exact species because of hybridisations.)

Plant babies!
I actually have a lot more than shown here. The green ones is a jade and I have forgotten the name of the other ones.
A few years ago a brought one of the white ones and it broke a bunch before I got it home and so I planted the broken bits and now I have 2 more fully grown ones :D
It's wierd how they just break off. They can be dry and fall off but also perfectly watered etc and still want to self propogate.

The willow twigs have taken very well. I hadn't expected catkins so quickly.
Gradually, they will be knitted together to make an arch.

In Farsi, we call this Khar Zahre (poison of the donkey), I have no idea why. It's Oleander in English and it comes in different colors. We have them everywhere in south of France. Just like in the south of Iran where I was born.
Picked up a broken branch from the street last spring and put it into a pot.
It rooted and this year it's blooming. I really like it.
I want to do the same with the white and the red ones as well.

CW: The Damsel, story of a Rose
I planted a Dame Elizabeth Murdoch ("the Dame") standard rose in our front yard. Every so often I prune it to maintain the shape.
I don't waste the cuttings; I attempt to turn them into new roses. I have succeeded only once. I call the new rose "The Damsel". This is her story, and it begins almost a year ago, on 24 March 2024.
She was a small cutting, but she took root. She survived the move to a bigger pot, but languished a bit.

This is a cutting I replanted next week. I had to trim it a little for the roots to comfortably fit in the soil. I saved the parts I broke off and they started growing roots.
I'm not sure how long I should wait until I plant them.

In front and at the back on the left are two hardwood cuttings of Catalpa, the Indian bean tree.
They are much too small to support the giant leaves of the mature trees but there are green sprouts on both. Whether they can establish is still uncertain but there is some life there at least. The twigs are very light, like balsa. There is practically no substance to them. It will be a slow process I think.

2 weeks soaked in water & my #willow #cuttings have developed new #roots 😊 I did both #hardwood & #softwood cutting #plant #propagation experiments.

Other hardwood cuttings have done very well but I was very sceptical about Catalpa, the Indian Bean Tree.
The wood is very lightweight, like balsa, so there is very little substance there. Also, buds break very late. My tree is just starting now.
So I was amazed that all four of the cuttings have tiny green buds. Early days and they may come to nothing but who knows?
@MPaola @BroadforkForVictory -
The principle of "stick them in the ground and they will grow" worked well with the dormant willow twigs.
-
Yesterday's photo of the hardwood cuttings put a broad bean centre stage.
These are much more informative.
-
Early days to make an assessment of the hardwood cuttings but there are seven variegated Weigela and the Physocarpus are showing good growth.
