  3. Downtown #VictoriaBC will be filled with music, colour and tradition on April 11 as the Victoria #BengaliCulturalSociety hosts its first outdoor celebration of #PohelaBoishakh - the #Bengali #NewYear. The #FreeEvent, set for #CentennialSquare at noon, marks a milestone for the local Bengali community, bringing one of its most recognized #cultural traditions into the public square. For the first time in Victoria, organizers will stage the #MongolShobhajatra -a “parade of well-being” recognized by #UNESCO. The procession will feature large, handcrafted masks and vibrant artistic structures, accompanied by drumming and music symbolizing #peace and #unity.

The parade is expected to begin around 1 p.m. The celebration will also include live Bengali music and dance performances, a food fair showcasing #SouthAsian cuisine, and vendor stalls offering traditional clothing and handmade goods. Organizers say the event is meant to highlight the #diversity of #cultures on #VancouverIsland while offering residents a chance to engage with Bengali traditions.

  8. community.admitone.com/commie-?

Hosted by PINDN and Wes Carroll A #CommieBop is an expression of freedom, verve, and solidarity. Share yours with us—let’s bask in the liberating imagination of our city!
Sign Up Via Google Forums or at 6:45pm before the event. Doors: 6pm Event: 7pm - 10pm Performer sign up: forms.gle/kXjoJbyf155p1ktY9

All proceeds go to Awi'nakola: Tree of Life Foundation A Commie Bop is freedom in motion—a song, a poem, a spell, a skit, a dance against the grind of #colonial #capitalism. It’s where creativity smashes exploitation, where solidarity squeezes alienation, and where we (yes, we, the ridiculous and unruly) celebrate our collective fire. This is a space to howl #anticapitalist anthems, share art that bites back, and honor past and future generations. #Leftist debates? Vital. But tonight we revel in the kaleidoscope of our movement, checking our purity test kits at the door with our hearts open to each other’s stories. We have license to be silly little peasants! Think Carnival mocking lords and kings…

#OpenMic Sets: Your offering does NOT need to involve a complex analysis - our day-to-day experiences put us into the crosshairs of capitalism’s contradictions. Sets should be 10 minutes or less. Please explain why you chose or wrote what you’re sharing. #Performers are encouraged to make space for audience participation - teach us your chorus, wrangle us into your skit, add call and response, or bring up Alice to play the tambourine or the triangle.

All acts should, in their own unique way, call for an end to exploitation and discrimination. This space celebrates dignity. Check lyrics for oppressive language (racist, sexist, ableist, SWERFS, TERFS, etc.). We fight systems, not each other. Please respect the venue.

We will save five sets as first come first serve before the event and open up the rest for folks who wish to register via Google Forms. NOT READY YET? Join the crowd, soak up the vibes, and cook something up for next time.

Keep the #Halloween spirit going in our neighbourhood with a #community #PumpkinParade!

Bring your carved #JackOLanterns down to #GorgePark between 3-5pm on November 1st, then return from 6-8pm to see them all lit up together as you take a spooky stroll! There is no limit to the number of #pumpkins you can bring down - the more, the merrier!

  12. We will be showing all of our ribbon skirts, along with past ribbon skirt workshop participants, at the joint #TruthAndReconciliation special evening event, co-hosted by #SNIWWOC & #KWENCH on September 30th.

    Event Info:

SNIWWOC will be hosting our annual Truth and Reconciliation event at KWENCH bringing #community members together for an evening of #education, #togetherness, and #remembrance for Truth and Reconciliation in #VictoriaBC on September 30th 2024, 5:30-7:30pm PST.

#JoinUs to learn about the sacred #Indigenous practice of #RibbonSkirt making and the significance it holds within the Indigenous community. You will have the unique opportunity to view these beautiful skirts made by BC Indigenous/Indigenous BIPOC individuals, and learn about the importance of continuing these traditions.

You will also have the privilege to #WitnessTestimony from #ResidentialSchoolSurvivors, the ones who did not make it as well as for honoring all #IndigenousCommunities.

Truth and Reconciliation, also known as #OrangeShirtDay, is a reminder of what was done in #Canadian history that impacted the #IndigenousPeople, and continues to impact generations of Indigenous communities. On this day we highlight how the conversation needs to be continued as a step for #healing and #reconciliation.

SNIWWOC would like to take this time and day to #honor the people and their #culture that was lost. You will hear from a variety of #IndigenousSpeakers, #CommunityElders, and be witness to #SacredKnowledge, in the #SafeSpace that we will hold for all that would like to be part of this experience.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone, celebrating and giving a voice for those who could not. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided!
