November's cocktail pie: Eggnog Turkey Pie
Eggnog is, of course, a creamy cocktail flavoured with nutmeg and a spirit.
For my pie I made a shortcrust pastry filled with shredded turkey and pancetta in a bread(less) sauce, with a brandy and orange cranberry sauce topping.
Suitable for many winter feasts - I took it up a hill on New Year's Day (sorry November).

I was sitting here being like I'm forgetting something in my Xmas tradition line up and then it hit me... I need to make the eggnog for tomorrow! (Don't worry. I have the stuff. I just totally spaced that I have tasks to accomplish because what I'm really waiting for is 20:00 so I can eat some of that sweet, sweet raclette. GET THE CHEESE AND POTATOES AND CHARCUTERIE IN MY MOUTH!!!!!)
And yes, I'll probably be tooting a lot tonight. 🐘

2. Place the egg whites in the bowl of a stand mixer and beat to soft peaks. With the mixer still running gradually add the 1 tablespoon of sugar and beat until stiff peaks form.
3. Whisk the egg whites into the mixture. Chill in the refrigerator, a few hours or overnight.
4. Serve with a sprinkle of fresh nutmeg or allspice on top.

4 egg yolks
1/3 cup sugar, plus 1 tablespoon
2 cups whole milk
1 cup heavy cream
3 ounces bourbon (optional)
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
4 egg whitesDirections
1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the egg yolks until they lighten in color. Gradually add the 1/3 cup sugar and continue to beat until it is completely dissolved. Add the milk, cream, bourbon (optional) and nutmeg and stir to combine. Move mixture to a separate bowl.

Are you an #eggnog family? We weren’t because the store bought stuff tastes like crap. Then one year my in-laws insisted on having it Christmas morning, so I made it from scratch and it was fantastic! Now I get why people like it.
Here is an excellent recipe. You do need a stand mixer to make it.

Okay, turns out eggnog makes amazing French toast batter. Particularly if you like it sweeter and a little less eggy. Not surprising, they're both basically eggs, cream, milk, sugar, spices. Stores are literally selling drinkable French toast batter in the dairy section this time of year. 😋

It’s that time of year again where I try different egg nogs and share my unasked for opinion! This year’s entry in “NogOff 2025”: Elmhurst Oat Nog.
Not bad! Especially for a non dairy option. It has a bit of a chalky aftertaste, but not overwhelmingly so. Of the non-dairy options I’ve had, it’s probably the best so far. #nogoff2025 #eggnog

I have a little stash of vegan eggnog for the holiday season. When I developed my milk allergy, I thought I’d never taste eggnog again. It was marvellous to be proven wrong about that.
Here’s another interesting anecdote on this topic. My family were teetotalers, so I was well into adulthood before I realized that eggnog (and apple cider) could be alcoholic drinks for some folks.
