The green comet, C/2022 E3 (ZTF). Did you manage to see it?!
I did, was a smudge in my telescope.🤩
This comet hasn't been seen in over 50,000 years and came within 27 million miles of us. Then it continued its journey out past Mars on its way to explore the universe again.🥰

For those looking for the dim M7.1 #CometZTF, it's *kind of easy* to spot tonight 2/15, near orange star #Aldebaran, the eye of #Taurus the bull, not to be confused with a nearby brighter, rustier looking #Mars. Look for a disappointing smear of gray in the telescope.
-
Clear skies early tonight, 2/15 will let us take out the telescopes at the #WestportObservatory for the WAS Weekly Wednesday #StarParty when we open the dome after 8 pm. No Moon, last views of dim #CometZTF and deep sky stuff with you and your universe!

Mars and Comet ZTF are meeting tonight and tomorrow. This is a look at tomorrow night around 8 pm EST.
Anyone going to attempt to catch this?
I'm going to have to do a wide field shot and will have to go somewhere other than my backyard due to trees and houses in that location.

Here's Comet ZTF zooming through space over 2.5 hours! Done in @Siril_Official. See the full how-to video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SwuYHJXc0U

We'll see a few clouds pass over the #WestportObservatory when we open for the WAS Weekly Wednesday #StarParty this evening, 2/8, after 8 pm. We're excited to see #Mars, rapidly fading "green" #CometZTF, late views of the #Moon and your Universe TONIGHT!

I got a *slightly better* shot of the green comet on Monday night (my last night in St Maarten), shooting as soon as the sky got dark & before the just-past-full moon came up. (3 seconds @ ISO 1600.) I call this one "Unambiguous Splotch of Pixels." ;) (Still couldn't see it with binoculars; d'oh!) #comet #cometZTF #greencomet

Here's my best attempt from earlier tonight to catch #CometZTF (upper left) and Capella (lower right) in the same ~1º field of view. Forty DSLR frames at 2.5-s each, 250mm lens, f/6.3, ISO 1600, registered and median-combined. Color's not bad, but still not quite right.

Around this time the full #Moon rises, and its light will make the comet difficult to see, so try to see it early. It's easier to see in a telescope, but from a dark location it might be visible to eyes alone.
If you miss tonight's opportunity, there are three other dates coming up on which #CometZTF will appear close enough to bright objects to find it easily with binoculars. It will be near the location of Mars on the nights of 10-11 February, and then near Aldebaran on the 14th. #astronomy

If you want to see the famous green comet at its best and brightest: tonight (5th February) is your night.
Look high in the east around 7pm local time. You'll see bright #Mars and the nearby reddish star #Aldebaran. Continue to the left and you'll find the bright yellow star #Capella. Tonight only, #CometZTF is close enough to Capella to see it in the same binocular field of view. You'll see it as a distinct smudge of light.

Thanks to WAS member Dr. Steven Labkoff for great shots of #CometZTF, some serious aircraft over the observatory, Dan Wright running 2 Dobs on the Moon and Mars while Bob Meadows keeps the 25 scope on the Comet at the last #WestportObservatory WAS Weekly Wednesday #StarParty.

Uploading this as not a video thumbnail.
First frame is a single exposure, then star stack, then comet stackc, (missing frame) stars only without the cometary nebula, then the final composite.
Done in Siril and Photoshop with some help from Starnet++. I linked to a 'how to' video yesterday.

It'll be back in another 50,000 years... -

The current orbital solution for #C2022E3ZTF has it remaining just barely gravitationally bound to the Sun.
So it may fall back down to the inner solar system in many hundreds of thousands of years.
Or it may be sent out to interstellar space due to a passing star.
It happens.

Tonight's moonlight has been brutal for the Comet's tail. Since 180 sec exposure. Hopefully I can tease it out when I stack.
Will be doing tutorial on how to stack this with @Siril_Official tomorrow.

After a month of clouds with very few hours of clear skies ... I'm finally able to go comet hunting!
