Hecate for #ClassicsTober25 - although a minor figure in the magnificent Jupiter and Semele by Gustave Moreau - Hecate’s presence as a chthonic goddess is significant to this work.
Semele’s demise was wrought by Juno but ultimately enacted by Jupiter. And who should wait patiently in the shadows? Hecate of course. With her crescent moon crown and wide-eyed stare, Hecate stands ready to meet Semele.

A woman’s linen shroud from Roman Period Egypt is our pick today for #ClassicsTober25.
The artistry is phenomenal. Beyond the central portrait, the figure is surrounded by Egyptian iconography from uraeus-cobras, the goddesses Isis and Nephthys depicted as red kites, and the four mummy-shaped “sons of Horus” associated with the bodily integrity. At the bottom we see the woman led by Horus and Anubis into the afterlife.
