  1. And of course we wouldn't leave Liga Hostos behind. We can't believe you can field an entire lineup *and* a staff out of these.

Here, our favorite is probably the #CapitanesMAY's :capitanes: Natanael Naranjo, or "Natty Orangetree," as the gringos call him.

  2. (3) #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: (24-14)
    vs. (14) #MacabeosTRU :macabeos: (23-15)

We're happy to extol the Capitanes' potent offense, led by .339 hitters and corner infielders Alberto García and Luis Mena. We're happy to talk about their strikeout-heavy pitching.

But we'll also tell you none of that matters, because the Macabeos have a Triple Crown in Gustavo Ramos (.409/5 HR/40 RsBI) and one of the Four Workhorses of the Apocalypse in Jesús Martínez. They have that dawg in them. Macas in 3.

  3. They recently managed to sweep the mighty #CapitanesMAY :capitanes:—in one game throwing out FOUR of them at home plate—to go up to 27-21.

So it's entirely possible they could finish with a winning record, which even three years ago was impossible. And they don't even have Snowbrino now!

  4. #IngenierosRIN :ingenieros: fans after beating the #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: four times in May:

  5. The #IngenierosRIN :ingenieros: are 25-21 on May 21st, 1888.

We’re not going to look it up, but we’re pretty sure that’s the first winning record they’ve had that far into the season.

Better yet, all four games over .500 are from sweeping their division leader, the #CapitanesMAY :capitanes:, whom they played four times in their last five games.

  6. Notables joining the First Whacker of the Year Club:

    - Indalecio "El Volcán" Flores (RF, #JueyerosMAU :jueyeros:)

    - Raúl Gómez (1B, #CapitanesMAY :capitanes:)

    - Álvaro "Gaucho" Fernández (1B, #BrujosGUM :brujos:)

  7. Speaking of the #PiratasQUE :piratas: baserunning, first baseman José Rentería probably wants this series to go at least two more games.

He's at 24 stolen bases in the 1887 postseason—two away from tying Fernando López's (#CapitanesMAY :capitanes:) record.

  9. CW: LNP 1886 playoffs—Serie Preliminar matchups (11)

    #VejigantesLOÍ :vejigantes: (1-1) #CapitanesMAY :capitanes:
    (MAY favored, 63.04%)

After their ace López, got bloodied in Game 1, the Rojizules sent out 39-year-old Rodrigues . . . and their lineup promptly turned it around, managing not to strike out even once against Gerardo Acevedo. Exciting!

  10. Oh, boy. Rematch with the champions.

    Opponent: #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: (52-26)
    Pitcher: LHP Jesús López (21-2, 1.63 ERA / 2.06 FIP / 0.91 WHIP)

    Lineup:
    CF Trevizo
    RF Tomé
    1B Fernández
    3B González
    LF Arredondo
    2B Santillán
    C Romero
    SS Guerrero

  11. @thomas They’re in the #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: division, so they’re all but SOL in terms of actually winning the thing outright. Their one hope would be to somehow magically put together a wildcard run, and while that is exceedingly unlikely, they’ve somehow been around .400 all year with Ramón Moreno gone for injuries. It’s a real possibility they could have a winning season soon.

  12. 07/03/1886:
Right now, 9 teams are locked into the playoffs.

    #ValencianosJUN :valencianos: (61-13)
    #BrujosGUM :brujos: (61-16)
    #TortugasCUL :tortugas: (53-21)
    #MogotesFLO :mogotes: (51-25)
    #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: (50-25)
    #GrisesHUM :grises: (50-26)
    #PiratasQUE :piratas: (49-24)
    #MulosAGB :mulos: (49-26)
    #CorsosYAU :corsos: (47-23)

  13. @thomas Our simulator doesn't track win streaks very well, but as far as we know, the longest win streak before this year was 23 games, so yes, they definitely broke that.

The #IngenierosRIN :ingenieros: have gone 6-4 over their last ten, including beating the #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: back to back. They're 22-26 for the year! That's a .458 percentage!

  14. With a third of the season over, 5 teams are currently locks for the playoffs.

The first two make sense, as they won the league pennants last year:
    #ValencianosJUN :valencianos: (35-8)
    #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: (29-13)

There's also the #TitanesMOR :titanes: (31-11) and #MogotesFLO :mogotes: (29-12), who benefited from the complete (in the latter case, continued) collapse of their divisions.

    And there's the unignorable #BrujosGUM :brujos: (40-4), who've won 34 in a row.

    #LNP1886 #EchaFufú 🔮

  15. Game #1 is going to be particularly brutal.

The #BrujosGUM :brujos: and #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: are neck-and-neck at the top of Hostos in most hitting metrics—the Brujos hit harder, but the Capitanes get on base more consistently and move faster on them.

Pitching-wise, the Capitanes have a clear advantage, even possibly in bullpens—their José Ramírez, a righty closer, has racked up 3 saves and an 0.75 ERA / 2.12 FIP / 0.75 WHIP line.

  16. By the way, #BrujosGUM :brujos: fans: laugh up the 28-game win streak as long as you can.

Because tomorrow, Game #1 has Depo on the mound against the #CapitanesMAY :capitanes:—the walkiest lineup in Hostos—and he won't have Guerrero, Santillán, or Trevizo behind him.

  17. HOSTOS:

    BotM:
    Raúl Gómez (1B, #CapitanesMAY :capitanes:)
    .408/.511/.632, 10 2B, 20 RsBI, 13 BB

    PotM:
    Luis "Empanada" Soler (#PiratasQUE :piratas:)
    76 IP, 9-0, 1.89 ERA / 1.46 FIP, 70 K / 12 BB

    RotM:
    Thomas Deportista (SP, #BrujosGUM :brujos:)
    65.2 IP, 7-1, 2.19 ERA / 2.38 FIP, 68 K / 27 BB

  18. CW: :lnp: preseason predictions (LH)

    LH Oeste:
That's right—our predictions are running the table.

Yes, the #FundadoresAÑA :fundadores: and #IngenierosRIN :ingenieros: added a couple strong pieces each, but the defending champion #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: are in excellent shape without making major roster changes. They'll take banner 16.

  19. 03/24/1886:
I'll be honest: Primaverales or no, I didn't expect to beat the #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: when they're possibly the most stacked team in the league.

Only scoring two runs in four innings off their worst pitcher, though . . .

And, of course, the roundup. All 3Bs this time:

    - Asdrúbal Gárica (19/★★) (#CorsosYAU :corsos:)
    - Héctor González (21/★★☆) (#TiburonesAGU :tiburones:)
    - Maximiliano Reséndez (21/★★) (#ChupacabrasCAN :chupacabras:)

  21. CW: 1885 Acutísimos—P

    Betances:
    Antonio Enríquez (#SolesLUQ :soles:)
    .943 FPCT, +3.7 ZR, 1.082 EFF

Well, it's something—Enríquez, a 20-year-old rookie portsider, led his league in wild pitches and walks and had the fewest wins. At least he showed some good glovework?

    atl-01.statsplus.net/lnp/playe

    Hostos
    Jesús López (#CapitanesMAY :capitanes:)
    .921 FPCT, +5.2 ZR, 1.187 EFF

Nice end to a 31-win, 1.54 ERA season that got him three postseason Ilustres as well as a second title.

  22. CW: Ted Balloon—bio (2)

Ted, ever the dutiful son, took his father's advice.

It wasn't bad: Dámaso Martínez, who could play six positions, had listed himself as a pitcher and gotten hired by the #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: *and* #MarinerosBAR :marineros: in 1885.

But, Ted hoped, he'd get second.

Sure, he wasn't likely to sock dingers, but he had a great swing, the kind of speed you might need to get on a moving horse, and a very good throwing arm.

  23. The #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: walked into Game 6 with a 3-2 series lead, and their 36-year-old ace, Jesús López, ready to take the mound.

The #ValencianosJUN :valencianos: came in facing elimination.

One of these teams rose to the occasion.

  24. 8TH—#CapitanesMAY 🎖️

Javier Corona flies out, but Casas singles, and Vidal scores him.

Marco Flores takes the mound and forces a groundout from Gámez, allowing Vidal to reach third, before striking out his opposite number.

  25. 7TH—#CapitanesMAY 🎖️

Ángelo Pérez gets through it in ten pitches in very similar fashion—two flyouts and a grounder.

  26. 6TH—#CapitanesMAY 🎖️

Jesús López reaches on error, but that's all they can get off Pérez in this half-inning, thanks to two flyouts from Vidal and Fernando López.

  27. 5TH—#CapitanesMAY 🎖️

Why you don't let the first man on—Jesús López reaches on error, and Fernando López's sac bunt goes too well. Bobadilla's reach scores F. López, Moreno walks, Gómez scores Fernando López via sac fly, and Corona lets Bobadilla and Moreno score.

  28. 4TH—#CapitanesMAY 🎖️

Disaster almost strikes—after Gómez flies out, Pérez walks Corona, and a wild pitch allows him to reach second, Casas flies out, and Vidal gets him to third via reach on error.

Luckily, Gámez grounds out immediately thereafter.

  29. 3RD—#CapitanesMAY 🎖️

The Fernanduo grounds out, followed by Alejandro Moreno, as Ángelo Pérez appears to have settled in by this third inning.

  30. 2ND—#CapitanesMAY 🎖️

After Sergio Vidal and Gerardo Gámez both work full counts out of Ángelo Pérez, he gets them to fly out and ground out, before his counterpart Jesús López flies out on the first pitch.

    7. R. Reyes (3B, #ValencianosJUN :valencianos:)
    8. Montes (C, #CañerosVGB :caneros:)

  33. Both of these teams are in the same division (Liga Hostos Oeste) so they've played each other every year since 1871.

It has not gone well for the #IngenierosRIN :ingenieros:—note, particularly, that they did not win a single game against the #CapitanesMAY :capitanes: between 1876 and 1880.
