I did computer building and repair at small independent computer stores for many years. I saw all kinds of different contaminants accumulate to ridiculous degrees inside computer chassis - dust, dirt, bugs, hair, the sticky yellow creosote-like cigarette smoke residue - but kitty litter dust would be a new one on me.

    Yikes.

The capacitor plague of the very late 90s through to the early-mid 2010s was a real pain in the ass for anyone who keeps electronics for more than a few years. We're still replacing leaky and blown-up caps in that equipment 😜

  2. Electrolytic capacitor top, with the partial cuts that allow it to vent safely, with the embossed text "FRONT TOWARDS ENEMY".

(This has been a joke image post by an engineer who is not also a capable graphic designer. If you are unsatisfied with the resulting humour, please return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.)

  4. Articles about some unlovely middle-aged-bytes.

Between the #i820, #RDRAM, the first-gen #Pentium4, and the #CapacitorPlague, I'm glad I wasn't yet into system building in the early aughts.

  5. So, it seems my #macintosh LC is not immune to the #capacitorplague 🫤
There is not a lot of corrosion, but the electrolyte is visible. I cleaned it up with vinegar and then isopropyl alcohol to stop the corrosion.
It seems like I'll need to buy a #capacitor kit and have some fun with the soldering iron... 🤷‍♂️
But now I want to check it it stills boots.
