"Yes, I demand and desire freedom. I admit that I fight for my freedom and the freedom of all. For that, I do not need the power to confine or exclude life. For that, I definitely do not have to pass judgment on other people. The prosecutor’s office will gladly do that. Freedom is something else for me. It blossoms in the belief that together we can create something more just than prisons, camps, and deportation centers, that we can create something more peaceful than handcuffs, weapons, and whole divisions of tanks. Some good news, at least provisionally: 21-year-old antifascist Zaid A. was paroled on Friday after three months in custody in Cologne, Germany. He had been held under threat of extradition to Hungary in connection with the "Budapest Complex" cases relating to events that took place during a major international neo-Nazi gathering in Feb. 2023.

This is noteworthy in part because, while seven suspects turned themselves in to German authorities in January after spending nearly two years out of sight, the other six have not been threatened with extradition because they are all German citizens (they are nonetheless likely to be tried in Germany on behalf of the Hungarian gov't). Zaid, by contrast, is a Syrian citizen, despite having grown up in Germany.

Zaid is now on a suspended sentence (he still has to check in with the cops three times a week), and it's unclear what will happen next. He could still be extradited, or he could also be prosecuted in Germany on Hungary's behalf. In the worst case scenario, he is looking at a sentence of up to 24 years. For now, though, it sounds like he and his family are relieved, if still very cautious.

The Budapest Complex

The “Budapest Complex” refers to an extensive investigation against anti-fascists in connection with protests against the far-right “Day of Honor” in Budapest in February 2023.

This annual event brings together neo-Nazis from all over Europe to commemorate fallen Nazi soldiers.

The case has attracted international attention as it has resulted in the Europe-wide criminalization of anti-fascists, who face long prison sentences.

The focus is on a regime in Hungary that has been carrying out an authoritarian turnaround for years with the help of enemy stereotypes such as “anti-fascism”.

The exhibition can be visited from 6 pm. The comic “This night will not be a short one” by Italian artist Zerocalcare (https://letatl.in/products/diese-nacht-wird-keine-kurze-sein), which deals with the “Budapest Complex”, will be on sale.

There will be food and the opportunity to write postcards to the imprisoned anti-fascists.

Seven of the anti-fascists in hiding since the ‘Day of Honour’ events in Budapest have turned themselves in to German authorities, reported ABC Dresden on 20 January. The unnamed activists are accused of dangerous bodily harm and membership of a criminal organisation following attacks on German, Polish and Hungarian neo-Nazis at the far-right convergence in February 2023.

It is understood that several of them are also accused of attempted murder. Gino, another anti-fascist wanted in the case, was recently arrested in France and is currently battling his extradition to Hungary.

Meanwhile, supporters reported that Maja T., a non-binary activist also accused in the case, is being offered 14 years in prison in return for a confession. Extradited to Hungary in what supporters described as a ‘night and fog’ operation, they could otherwise face up to 20 years at trial.
