Coral bleaching vs mortality
When the ocean get too hot, corals expel the zooxanthellae algae that lives in their tissue.
In Western Australia, the damage to coral reefs including the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo has eclipsed any previous bleaching events.
These microorganisms give corals their bright pastel colours and disease resistance.
Their absence creates the bleaching effect many Australians have become all too familiar with.

Rising sea temperatures around planet have caused #bleaching event that is expected to be most extensive on record. It is fourth such global event on record and is expected to affect more reefs than any other. Bleaching occurs when #corals become so stressed they lose symbiotic algae they need to survive. "Globally, coral reefs, which underpin commercial fisheries and protect coastlines from storms, have declined by half since the 1950s, largely due to #ClimateChange. Spells of extreme #MarineHeat break down the relationship between #coral and a type of symbiotic #algae that gives it both food and its vibrant colors. The coral turns white — a process referred to as #bleaching — and can then easily starve to death.
"The reefs in Cambodia and in the broader #EastAsian region, however, appear to be bucking this trend. Surveys indicate that they haven’t declined in recent decades, perhaps because they’re more resilient to warming. Their secret to survival may ultimately help safeguard ailing reefs elsewhere."
