This 1805 AD #CompanyPainting by artist Mahangu Lal from #Barrackpore Menagerie established by #EastIndiaCompany Governor General Richard Wellesley in 1801 AD is on view at @britishlibrary exhibition '#Animals: #Art Science and Sound'.

The Menagerie closed down in 1876 and the #Animals were transferred to Alipore which later became the #Calcutta Zoo. #Kolkata #Bengal #India

#Barrackpore Menagerie, known as The Institution for Promoting the Natural #History of #India was established outside #Calcutta (#Kolkata) #Bengal by #EastIndiaCompany Governor General Richard Wellesley in 1801.
Aim was to increase Western scientific knowledge of the #Flora & #Fauna of India.
