Longbourn by Jo Baker. This is Pride and Prejudice below stairs, very skilfully done. As well as providing an insight into the work behind all the social events in P&P it shows us another side of its protagonists and sets them all against the realities of life for rich and poor in early C19th Britain. I question whether the final bit rings true - would Sarah really undertake that journey? - but overall I really enjoyed it, unlike other reworkings of #Austen's characters.

Jane Austen's Emma. Read aloud with the Mrs. Having seen the 90s and the recent film adaptations, I had a general idea of the story, but getting Austen's prose is of course far superior. Mrs Elton is as rude and insufferable in her proper regency presentation as ever. Mr Woodhouse's hypochondria never fails to elicit a chuckle.

I minored in #English for my undergrad, and also had a work-study position for the department. One of my tasks was to read Jane Austen's novels so that I could more effectively edit the 80-page bibliography of one of my professors' magnum opus Austen book. It was a truly blessed experience and I've held admiration for #Austen ever since. Which is all to say that I highly commend this article on her #Spirituality and #Anglican faith.

My #currentread. Pictured here w/installation at the Halifax main library of paintings on old catalog cards. About halfway through - it's fascinating. A lot of this is remedial for me, but quite a bit is also new. I didn't know how totalitarian England was during the Napoleonic wars. Also for the first 2/3 of Austen's life, abortion was legal! O_o
