Day 16: Home Sweet Home
I am home. I'm fine.
A couple days ago, I just decided that I was done hiking the trail. They say to never leave on a bad day. So, I waited a couple days before making a final decision. I just wasn't enjoying it as much as I thought I would. As I said before I left, I love hiking but I don't love camping. I loved the people and all the unique trail towns and places I got to see in my 2 weeks out there.

Day 14: Doyle Hotel in Duncannon, PA. I have completed 124 miles on the trail! We did 14 miles yesterday, mostly through fields and pastures. I learned that my least favorite thing on the trail is hiking through wet grass! My feet got soaked and stayed wet all day.
We did 11 miles today into town. Several of us are staying at this old hotel called the Doyle. Very basic room but at least there's a restaurant downstairs. We plan to zero here tomorrow. My body needs some rest.

Day 10: IronMasters Mansion, PA
We have made it 78 miles! We crossed the halfway market on the trail today.
It got down to 35F two nights ago. I didn't freeze to death but it was rough. I was wearing all my clothes in my sleeping bag.
Our original tramily broke up but I have reconnected with Thimbles and Bill, who I met a few days ago. I actually gave Bill his hiker name last night. We are calling him Clothesline now. He sets up a clothes line every time we stop. 🤣

Day 7: Yesterday, we got dropped off 14 miles up trail and slack packed back to the hostel.
14 miles was too much. No injuries but the soles of my feet are sore. My body is telling me to slow down. I've been hiking too much to keep up with my tramily. Time to hike my own hike. I'm taking a zero today.
Our Tramily has broken up. A couple got off trail, a couple are hiking on, and one is a day behind. Hopefully, we will see each other again. They are all great people!

Day 5: We made it to Pen Mar Park. We have hiked all the way through Maryland! 41 miles, 7,000 ft of ascent, & 6,000 ft of descent.
Tonight, we're staying at a hostel. Tomorrow we will slack pack 12 miles and stay here again.
We lost a couple members of our Tramily. One dropped out and the other was just hiking Maryland. Sad to see Rocks and Doc go. They will be missed.
Pennsylvania here we come!!!!

This is the group I'm hiking with.
I have a hiker name now: Magic Mike! 🕺
I also got a tick bite. We got it removed. We have an actual doctor in the group and she said I'm probably fine. Just watch out for the bullseye or a fever. Ugh.

I've made it 2 days on the trail so far.
I did 6 miles the first day from Harpers Ferry, WV to the Ed Garvey shelter. The 1,000 ft climb out of Harper's Ferry had me questioning my life choices. 🤣
Today, I ended up doing 11 miles to the Dahlgren backpack camp. Longer than I planned but there are showers here! One of the guys hiking around me ordered pizza. Best shower and pizza I've ever had!
I'm already making friends out here. No hiker name yet.

We are here in Harper's Ferry, WV! We stopped at the AT headquarters and picked up my hiker tag. I will get my official number and photo taken when I head out tomorrow.

I might have come up with a trail name.
I was telling my wife that I need to stay on the trail at least long enough to get a trail name. Then I thought; if I don't get a trail name, I can't leave the trail. She suggested the trail name: Nameless.
I kind of like it! What does Mastodon think? I'm sure it's been used before.
Of course, there's always the option of getting the name on the trail. I love that idea too. :)

Too much food?
I packed up 5 days worth of food for the start of my thru-hike. I have my first few days planned out and it will take me 4 to 5 days (depending on mileage) before I stop at my first hostel.
Food bag includes: Cook kit with fuel, 4 breakfasts, 5 lunches, 5 dinners, 3 snacks per day, and electrolyte drink mixes. 9.76 lbs in all.
Puts my total pack weight with 2 l of water at 30.5 pounds. Ugh.

I finally got around to setting up the tent in the back yard again. I wanted to test out my sleep system one last time. I got a new sleep pad last fall but it was warm out when I slept on it. It's the Sea to Summit Ether Light XT with an R value of 3.2. My previous Big Agnes pad was rated at 4.8. I just want to be sure it's warm enough for me. It's getting down to 37 F tonight, so it should be a good test.
Better to find out now than when I'm on the trail. 🥶

I finished up my repair kit today for my thru-hike. It includes:
Tenacious tape - for bottom of my tent and other repairs
Dyneema patches - for tent and backpack
Duct tape - because MacGyver
Patches and a spare valve for my sleep pad
A spare o-ring for Sawyer Squeeze water filter
Needle and floss for thread
I think that's it. Everything will go in my med kit except the floss and marker go in my food bag.
Am I missing anything? #whatsinyourpack?

Duct tape.... I want to take some on my thru-hike. I was originally planning to wrap it around my trekking poles. Unfortunately, the design of my poles means the tape would be far down my poles. I don't like the idea of adding weight that far down as I think it would affect the poles swing.
Plan B is to wrap some tape around the permanent marker I'm bringing.
How do you carry duct tape?

Spring is here! I had a wonderful, pain free hike today. At one point, I thought I was on the wrong trail. The normally leaf covered trail had turned sandy. Someone must have leaf blown the trail.
3 weeks until I head out on the Appalachian Trail!

I got a chance to try out the Flextail Zero Pump today. With the rechargeable battery and fitting, it weighs 2.1 oz. Note that there is no external charging port. The battery is removable and has a USB-C port on the side to recharge.
It took 1:11 min to inflate my Sea to Summit Ether Light XT sleeping pad (size Reg-wide).
My Flextail Tiny pump took 1:07 minutes.
More details in follow up post:

Hello. My name is Mike and I'm addicted to buying backpacking gear. 🤣
-
On a lighter note ( pun intended), do any of you have one of these tick remover tools? I was originally going to get one on Garage Grown Gear but they were out of stock. I see they carry them at REI too.
Do they work? Do I need it? I will have fine tipped tweezers in my med kit. So, I'm guessing I don't NEED it.

I've heard good things about Leukotape for blisters and blister prevention so I picked some up.
I didn't want to take a whole roll, so I looked for ideas online. One suggestion was to stick sections of tape to the backing paper for shipping labels. Since I sell on eBay for a living, I have no shortage of these. They are now in my med kit. I'll check back in a few weeks to make sure they haven't permanently attached to the paper.

Permethrin. Not exactly #whatsinyourpack, but it will be on my clothes. I treated all my hiking clothes today and will again when I head out in a few weeks.
I used this all last year (along with Picardin) and didn't find a tick on me all season.
Should I apply it to my tent and backpack as well?

I'm toying with the idea of blogging my thruhike of the Appalachian Trail. Originally, I planned to occasionally post on here and on FB for friends and family. Then I thought maybe I could just do it in one place for everyone.
I know about The Trek but the blogs on there seem more like articles written by journalists. I just want an easy to use site that I could post a paragraph or two and a couple photos.
Looking for recommendations. Thanks!

April 15th is the official start date for my AT thru-hike! That's just over 5 weeks away. I'm excited and freaked out!
My wife is probably the only person in the world that realizes how big a deal this hike is on a personal level. She's very worried I won't come back. Not because of any dangers on the trail but that I'll decide I just don't want to come home.
My biggest fear is quite the opposite. I'm worried I'll come home early and defeated.

Playing around with the FarOut app and figuring out how to use it.
I managed to plan my first route: Harpers Ferry to Ed Garvey shelter.
