GR11 Food- what to buy on a thru-hike in Spain:
videos.trom.tf/w/jvvhcamvWJ4fA…In this video I explain what food you can buy during the GR11 thru-hike across the Spanish Pyrenees (and this would apply to other hikes in Spain).
The great thing about the GR11 is that it allows you to pass by many little villages as you traverse the mountains. Many of these villages have little shops where you can buy: rice, pasta, nuts, fruits and vegetables, Picos, bread, and other basic goods.

4 days. 41 miles. Another fantastic #UwharrieTrail #ThruHike, if a bit damp at the end! 🌄🎒🥾⛺🌧️
At least the rain held off til the last night. And our gear will all dry out eventually...

4 days. 40 miles. #UwharrieTrail, here we come!
(My backpacking style might best be described as "ultralight maximalist". 😇 I've done literally hundreds of miles with this loadout now, and it's still always amazing to me how it all fits into - or onto - my pack... )

0x20 years ago today, Baxter Peak, at the completion of my northbound thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. 181 days in the woods (about 151 of those actually hiking.) The three guys in the lower left had driven up to ME the night before, to meet the three of us who clocked 2,000+ miles, so they were doubly-tired when we got there.

Day 16: Home Sweet Home
I am home. I'm fine.
A couple days ago, I just decided that I was done hiking the trail. They say to never leave on a bad day. So, I waited a couple days before making a final decision. I just wasn't enjoying it as much as I thought I would. As I said before I left, I love hiking but I don't love camping. I loved the people and all the unique trail towns and places I got to see in my 2 weeks out there.

Day 14: Doyle Hotel in Duncannon, PA. I have completed 124 miles on the trail! We did 14 miles yesterday, mostly through fields and pastures. I learned that my least favorite thing on the trail is hiking through wet grass! My feet got soaked and stayed wet all day.
We did 11 miles today into town. Several of us are staying at this old hotel called the Doyle. Very basic room but at least there's a restaurant downstairs. We plan to zero here tomorrow. My body needs some rest.
-
Day 7: Yesterday, we got dropped off 14 miles up trail and slack packed back to the hostel.
14 miles was too much. No injuries but the soles of my feet are sore. My body is telling me to slow down. I've been hiking too much to keep up with my tramily. Time to hike my own hike. I'm taking a zero today.
Our Tramily has broken up. A couple got off trail, a couple are hiking on, and one is a day behind. Hopefully, we will see each other again. They are all great people!
-
Day 5: We made it to Pen Mar Park. We have hiked all the way through Maryland! 41 miles, 7,000 ft of ascent, & 6,000 ft of descent.
Tonight, we're staying at a hostel. Tomorrow we will slack pack 12 miles and stay here again.
We lost a couple members of our Tramily. One dropped out and the other was just hiking Maryland. Sad to see Rocks and Doc go. They will be missed.
Pennsylvania here we come!!!!

This is the group I'm hiking with.
I have a hiker name now: Magic Mike! 🕺
I also got a tick bite. We got it removed. We have an actual doctor in the group and she said I'm probably fine. Just watch out for the bullseye or a fever. Ugh.

I've made it 2 days on the trail so far.
I did 6 miles the first day from Harpers Ferry, WV to the Ed Garvey shelter. The 1,000 ft climb out of Harper's Ferry had me questioning my life choices. 🤣
Today, I ended up doing 11 miles to the Dahlgren backpack camp. Longer than I planned but there are showers here! One of the guys hiking around me ordered pizza. Best shower and pizza I've ever had!
I'm already making friends out here. No hiker name yet.
-
We are here in Harper's Ferry, WV! We stopped at the AT headquarters and picked up my hiker tag. I will get my official number and photo taken when I head out tomorrow.
-
I might have come up with a trail name.
I was telling my wife that I need to stay on the trail at least long enough to get a trail name. Then I thought; if I don't get a trail name, I can't leave the trail. She suggested the trail name: Nameless.
I kind of like it! What does Mastodon think? I'm sure it's been used before.
Of course, there's always the option of getting the name on the trail. I love that idea too. :)

Too much food?
I packed up 5 days worth of food for the start of my thru-hike. I have my first few days planned out and it will take me 4 to 5 days (depending on mileage) before I stop at my first hostel.
Food bag includes: Cook kit with fuel, 4 breakfasts, 5 lunches, 5 dinners, 3 snacks per day, and electrolyte drink mixes. 9.76 lbs in all.
Puts my total pack weight with 2 l of water at 30.5 pounds. Ugh.

I sure am glad I tested out the Sea to Summit Ether Light NXT Insulated sleep pad in cold weather. I made it to 42 F at 4am before calling it. I was uncomfortably cold. I could feel the sleep pad pulling heat from my body.
I have an easy solution, go back to my Big Agnes Rapide SL sleep pad. I've slept with that one in the mid 30's with no issues. The only problem is that I sold it! So now I have to order it again. New pad should be here Wednesday.
Ugh.
-
I finally got around to setting up the tent in the back yard again. I wanted to test out my sleep system one last time. I got a new sleep pad last fall but it was warm out when I slept on it. It's the Sea to Summit Ether Light XT with an R value of 3.2. My previous Big Agnes pad was rated at 4.8. I just want to be sure it's warm enough for me. It's getting down to 37 F tonight, so it should be a good test.
Better to find out now than when I'm on the trail. 🥶

#whatsinyourpack? EVERYTHING!
I think I have finalized my gear. I still have a few days to make minor tweaks.
For food, freeze dried dinners have been purchased but I still need to go to the store for breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
16.5 pound base weight. I think that's pretty good for a guy that's 6'2", 255 lbs, and needs XL/2XL everything. I've been hiking with a 22lb pack recently and I hardly feel it.
You can check out my gear list here:

I finally settled on a pair of camp shoes.
Here is my previous post:
https://mas.to/@freeder23/112169040452433315I tried on the Birkenstock Arizona EVA foam sandals yesterday and loved them. They only weigh 9.8 ounces in a size 12 (my Zero sandals were 11.5oz). A little less bulky than Crocs so they should be more packable. I can also wear them with or without socks. They tick all the boxes except I won't be using them for water crossings. I'm fine with that.

I finished up my repair kit today for my thru-hike. It includes:
Tenacious tape - for bottom of my tent and other repairs
Dyneema patches - for tent and backpack
Duct tape - because MacGyver
Patches and a spare valve for my sleep pad
A spare o-ring for Sawyer Squeeze water filter
Needle and floss for thread
I think that's it. Everything will go in my med kit except the floss and marker go in my food bag.
Am I missing anything? #whatsinyourpack?

Duct tape.... I want to take some on my thru-hike. I was originally planning to wrap it around my trekking poles. Unfortunately, the design of my poles means the tape would be far down my poles. I don't like the idea of adding weight that far down as I think it would affect the poles swing.
Plan B is to wrap some tape around the permanent marker I'm bringing.
How do you carry duct tape?
