Einer der atmosphärischsten Zelt-Abende der letzten Jahre durfte ich vor gut 4 Wochen auf dem "Chao das Feiteiras" auf Madeira während unser Insel-Durchquerung genießen.
Wie auf der Insel üblich, kämpfte sich der Nebel aus den Tälern empor - an diesem Tag allerdings nicht wie fast immer schon mittags, sondern erst am Abend bei den letzten Sonnenstrahlen.
Ein wirklich sehr schönes und intensives Erlebnis, für das ich sehr dankbar bin.

The enormity of what I’m about to do feels so daunting. The anxiety of the unknown mixes with the excitement of adventure, and it’s hard not to start spiraling.
Maybe it’s biting off way more than I can chew, but I feel driven to at least take this journey as far as I can.
I hit the trailhead tomorrow.

Been filling up an old gas cannister with gas from half empty ones and making sure weight compares well with a newly bought full one. The FlipFuel really does an excellent job at recycling gas and it is easy to accomplish.

Day 10: IronMasters Mansion, PA
We have made it 78 miles! We crossed the halfway market on the trail today.
It got down to 35F two nights ago. I didn't freeze to death but it was rough. I was wearing all my clothes in my sleeping bag.
Our original tramily broke up but I have reconnected with Thimbles and Bill, who I met a few days ago. I actually gave Bill his hiker name last night. We are calling him Clothesline now. He sets up a clothes line every time we stop. 🤣

I might have come up with a trail name.
I was telling my wife that I need to stay on the trail at least long enough to get a trail name. Then I thought; if I don't get a trail name, I can't leave the trail. She suggested the trail name: Nameless.
I kind of like it! What does Mastodon think? I'm sure it's been used before.
Of course, there's always the option of getting the name on the trail. I love that idea too. :)

Duct tape.... I want to take some on my thru-hike. I was originally planning to wrap it around my trekking poles. Unfortunately, the design of my poles means the tape would be far down my poles. I don't like the idea of adding weight that far down as I think it would affect the poles swing.
Plan B is to wrap some tape around the permanent marker I'm bringing.
How do you carry duct tape?

21 years ago, I was splayed under a tarp in a steady rain/downpour in Molina Basin in the Catalinas, ~200 miles or so in on the #ArizonaTrail ! My passage through Sabino Cyn would be similarly wet and dreary. Too bad. Mebbe do a Mulligan here?

Big news today! I am going to thru-hike Appalachian Trail this year!!!
I told my parents yesterday, so I guess it's official.
I'm planning to do a flip flop starting in Harpers Ferry mid-April. I'll hike all the way to Mount Katahdin and then return to Harpers ferry to hike south all the way to Springer mountain.
