  5. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou – The Vodoun Effect (1972-75, Benin)

Our next spotlight is on number 965 on The List, submitted by platenworm.

From the amazing Analog Africa label, this is the first of three volumes collecting a few gems from “West Africa’s best-kept secret”, a band founded in 1968 first under the name “Orchestre Poly-Disco” that became one of the era’s best, funkiest, and most innovative. While volume 2 features songs that were professionally recorded for the Albarika Store label, the songs on this volume (as well as volume 3) were recorded in home studios with a single microphone or two for smaller labels and (with the exception of one track) previously saw only limited local release. From the Bandcamp description: “Two Vodun rhythms dominate the music of Orchestre Poly-Rythmo: Sato, an amazing, energetic rhythm performed using an immense vertical drum, and Sakpata, a rhythm dedicated to the divinity who protects people from smallpox. Both rhythms are represented here mixed in with Funk, Soul, crazy organ sounds and psychedelic guitar riffs.”

  15. Listening to slowed-down and pitch shifted versions of cumbia songs and totaly love it.

The back story is quite funny:
"The genre of cumbia rebajada emerged in Monterrey in the late 1970s, after the success of a cumbia set by DJ Gabriel Dueñez in which his turntables short-circuited, and began playing the records at slower speeds." (Wikipedia)
