  1. Interesting.

"[A] study […] published in the journal Nature in January 2026 […] showed for the first time that bird retinas don’t have some unusual adaptation for acquiring oxygen — they survive without it entirely. Instead, to bring energy to the tissue, they use a process called anaerobic glycolysis that is significantly less efficient than oxygen-powered metabolism but gets the job done."

  6. #UK - '#FoodWaste could help our farmers'

    Maisie Olah, 22 March 2026

"A Labour MP has said a new weekly food waste recycling service could help #farmers, by turning food waste into #fertiliser.

"Mary Creagh, MP for #Coventry East, said taking food waste out of black bins and putting it 'into #anaerobic digestion to create #digestate fertiliser' will help farmers due to fertiliser prices soaring because of 'conditions in the Middle East'.

"Coventry City Council will introduce a new weekly food waste recycling service for households in September - five months after the government's deadline.

"Twenty-three litre food caddies will be distributed to residents and will be collected five days a week, leaving other bins to be collected on different days of the week."

  7. I do not , but have been meaning for years to add some activity in my life...

A colleague of mine shared about his latest achievement (10Km).

I was tempted to share how he inspired me and to commit myself - with my team as witnesses (common psychologic trick)..

However, I decided to keep quiet - and to rely on pure to drive myself to try running a bit.

My succeeded and this week I managed to twice - nearly a mile each time!

    Gj me!

  8. "In a hot spring at Yellowstone National Park, a microbe does something that life shouldn’t be able to do: It breathes oxygen and sulfur at the same time."

  9. Yo, how do you make sure not to get #botulism when making flavored oils? I have some #fir needles that I straight up stole from a privately owned forest and I want to put them in some oil and then spray it all over my food like a maniac. But I don't want to be killed by some little stupid #bacteria. All the boring websites say either get ph-value of below 4,6 or get some salt, which makes sense for #ferments or get 121°c for 3 min if #canning. But what about in oil? It is #anaerobic, so risky

  15. A whole new order of #bacteria could hold the key to improving #biogas production phys.org/news/2023-09-bacteria

#PREPRINT: Unveiling the #ecology, #taxonomy and metabolic capabilities of #MBA03, a potential key player in #anaerobic digestion biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

"one particular family within this new order work in mutualistic collaboration with #archaea, other #microorganisms involved in anaerobic digestion. The bacteria produce metabolic compounds which the archaea then use to generate #methane"

Physiological and metabolic insights into the first cultured #anaerobic representative of deep-sea #Planctomycetes bacteria elifesciences.org/reviewed-pre

"Until recently, most research on the Planctomycetes family of bacteria has focused on strains in #freshwater and shallow #ocean environments, because of the logistical difficulties associated with sampling and cultivating deep-sea strains"

  17. The other #greenhousegas. How #methane from #foodwaste contributes to #globalwarming and why small efforts to stop it can make a big difference. Over time, food is buried under other #waste and #decomposes in #anaerobic conditions (without access to oxygen), creating a favorable environment for #bacteria that produce #methane, a greenhouse gas 28 times stronger than #carbondioxide over a 100-year period. reuters.com/graphics/FOOD-WAST

  18. It's not all easy..

For about 10 minutes every 6 weeks or so I let the brakes off for a little #Anaerobic shenanigans.

Today was that day. I'll be napping if anyone needs me 😊

Then back to sub 1.5mmol/L tomorrow.
