  34. The 1999 Helms-Biden Act ended a decade-long blockade of U.S. payments to the United Nations and stimulated significant reform of the U.N. institutions. It also points to an underlying principle of Joe Biden’s politics, which is central to understanding his legacy, argues Richard Lange.

  37. Simon/e Van Sarloos (UC Berkeley Department of Rhetoric) and I read excerpts from our Non-Monogamy letters yesterday at the #AmericanStudies meeting in Montreal to an attentive audience who asked good questions and made fun provocations. The letters have been published by Arts Everywhere.

I also write about going beyond settler monogamy or non-monogamy to less rigid ideas of what are supposed to be the most important relationships in our lives.

  38. In the days following the October 7th pogrom, one American Studies professor at Yale saw fit to celebrate the murders,
    nypost.com/2023/10/12/radical-
while another at UC-Davis posted a bloodthirsty threat against "zionist" journalists and their children.
    forward.com/fast-forward/56587

I was hoping, therefore, that the American Studies Association might, without mentioning any individuals, call on their faculty members not to celebrate or incite violence against the innocent.

    I hoped in vain.

The authors of today's ASA statement cannot find it within themselves to express one word of regret about the murder of Israelis , or one word of reassurance to Jewish students who might be scared by faculty Jew baiting of the type noted above.

The final section of the statement does mention an individual, Fatima Bernawi. She is named as an Afro-Palestinian who was imprisoned by the Israelis for ten years and so showing that "the Palestinian struggle is also the struggle for global Black solidarity in our collective liberation."

Unmentioned by the ASA is the reason for Bernawi's imprisonment; she planted a bomb in a Jerusalem cinema. Unmentioned too, is Avera Mengistu. Like Bernawi, this Ethiopian Jew is of African descent, and is like the majority of Israelis in being of non-European origins. Like Bernawi, he has been held captive for about ten years. Unlike Bernawi, his captors are Hamas and the only reason for his captivity is his nationality. Would the executive Committee of the ASA be keen to explain to Mengistu's distraught family and those related to other hostages that

"we remember solidarity and love as both a practice and an ethic. We protect us. Our struggles as Black, Brown and Indigenous peoples are real, and they connect us " ?

  46. I’m hoping for any suggestions or examples of a #LandBack research assignment for undergraduates. Some issues: A) I’m white, none or very few of the students will identify as indigenous—so need structure to avoid saviorism; B) I want students to identify and gather details about land parcels that could be granted back to one of the Ohlone bands in the Bay Area, but unsure what details students should gather; (1 of 2) #decolonization #indigenous @histodons @sociology #AmericanStudies
