  1. Texas Democrats taste victory,
    then turn on each other

Texas Democrats rejoiced Saturday after they flipped a state Senate seat
in a district that Donald Trump carried in 2024 by 17 percentage points,
hailing it as a burst of momentum for the midterms in the historically red state.

But they received a stark reminder of their own divides days later
when former Democratic congressman #Colin #Allred claimed that #James #Talarico,
a state representative running in the competitive Democratic primary for U.S. Senate,
    had referred to him as
    a “mediocre Black man.”

    Then, Allred endorsed Talarico’s rival, U.S. Rep. #Jasmine #Crockett,
two weeks before early voting for the 👉March 3 primary is set to begin.

Allred’s intervention exacerbated racial tensions that were already brewing between Crockett and Talarico
    — and raised new concerns inside the party that the infighting could make it harder for Democrats to eventually unify
for a long-awaited opportunity to turn Texas blue.

Talarico, who is White, pushed back on Allred’s claim.

Crockett, who like Allred is Black, praised his comments.

“Primaries are going to be raucous and contentious,” Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder told reporters Tuesday.

“They’re only going to get more so … as Texas gets more and more in play.”

He added that he hopes Democrats
“all treat each other with respect”
and understand the importance of moving
forward as a “team” after the primary.

  2. @TheHill @the-hill-TheHill

Forget Beto O'Roarke and the Senate.

While I like him, he burned a lot of bridges on Texas by running for POTUS in 2020 instead of running for Cornyn's Senate seat.

I'm glad to see Colin #Allred is running for Senate, building on his momentum in 2024 against Cruz.

  3. "#Beyoncé appealed to the Houston crowd, 'Imagine our daughters growing up, seeing what’s possible with no ceilings, no limitations.'

Whether that ceiling is broken in #Texas is vital for women — and it could soon be the difference in the US Government"

    #HarrisWalz2024 #Allred

  4. @jennyquackles2
The newspapers of the 6 largest cities in #Texas have ALL endorsed #CollinAllred over #CarnivalCruz, and yet #Allred has yet to run a single ad touting those endorsements. 🤨

  5. The 6 largest cities in #Texas:

    #Houston
    #Dallas
    #FortWorth
    #Austin
    #SanAntonio
    #ElPaso

Of the 6 largest newspapers in the state, how many endorsed #CarnivalCruz over #CollinAllred?

    ZERO.

    How many endorsed #Allred?

    ALL OF THEM.

  6. #Beyoncé, Tina Knowles, Kelly Rowland & Willie Nelson know the assignment. #Vote & GOTV for #Harris / #Walz! #Texas —also vote & GOTV for Collin #Allred to replace Cancún #Cruz so your next US Senator will have integrity instead of groveling for #MAGA votes despite #Trump maligning his family & him.

  7. This is my return bike ride home from early voting just now. The Velo Vote is in! Though I'm surrounded by idiocracy in Texas, I'm doing my best to change things with blue votes all the way down the ballot. The round trip bike ride and voting took less than 20 minutes total. #vote #harris2024 #allred

  8. Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s massive grift was embarrassingly revealed during his debate against Representative #Colin #Allred Tuesday night.

Cruz has been seriously struggling in his Senate race against Allred, and on Tuesday, it seemed that Allred dealt several critical blows to the Texas Republican.

In his closing remarks, Allred didn’t hold back.
“We’re all Americans, and we’re all Texans. We need a leader who will bring us together around our shared values. That’s what I’m trying to do during my six years in Congress.
💥That’s the exact opposite of what Senator Cruz has done,” Allred said.

“Whatever he says tonight, you’ve seen it for 12 years. He’s been one of the most #divisive senators in the entire country. If you don’t like how things are going in Washington right now, well, you know what, 💥he is singularly responsible for it.

“He has introduced this new kind of ‘#angertaiment’ where you just get people upset and then you podcast about it, and you write a book about it, and you make some money on it,
but you’re not actually there when people need you.
Like when the lights went out, when 30 million Texans were relying on a senator to spring into action,
    he went to Cancun.
That’s who he is,” Allred said.

  9. 🧵 (2/2) #Cruz was clearly uncomfortable when it came to the question of prosecuting Jan6 Insurrectionists. He clearly did not wish to offend T**** or his army of angry supporters whom still believe the 2020 election was "stolen" despite MULTIPLE recounts in EVERY swing state (conducted by organizations hired by the Trump campaign themselves) failing to produce ANY evidence of massive fraud (while IGNORING Trump's "Fake Electors" scheme that attempted to disenfranchise ENTIRE STATES.) #Allred

  10. 🧵 (1/2) #Cruz played to his base and I doubt changed many minds. He flat out lied about "two transgender men competing in women's boxing at the Paris Olympics". One of the women, Imane Khelif of Algeria, was "accused" of being transgender by a Right Wing blogger w/o proof because she looked "manish". It is both wildly offensive and insulting that Cruz would perpetuate this debunked lie, preying on the ignorance of his voters while demonizing trans KIDS, just to score political points. #Allred

  11. @FaithinBones
He said "Portland" (OR) and one other.

Those cities have since posted video of them being just fine and wondering WTF T**** (and #Cruz) are talking about.

But it's worth noting that #AntiFa DOESN'T EXIST, and vilifying #BLM is par for the course among today's #racist #GOP.

  12. In Texas and across the country,
far-right candidates have won control of school boards,
swiftly banning books, halting diversity efforts and altering curricula that do not align with their beliefs.

O’Hare’s election in Tarrant County, however, takes the battle from the schoolhouse to county government,
offering a rare look at what happens when hard-liners win the majority and exert their influence over municipal affairs in a closely divided county.

Since he was elected county judge
    — a position similar to that of mayor in a city
    — O’Hare has pushed his agenda with an uncompromising approach.
He has led efforts to cut funding to nonprofits that work with at-risk children, citing their views on racial inequality and LGBTQ+ rights.
And he has pushed election law changes that local Republican leaders said would favor them.

O’Hare’s rise in Tarrant County has come as he and his allies continue to align with once-fringe figures while targeting private citizens with whom they disagree politically.
In July, O’Hare had a local pastor removed from a public meeting for speaking eight seconds over his allotted time.
Days later, O’Hare appeared onstage at a conference that urged attendees to resist a Democratic campaign to “rid the earth of the white race” and embrace #Christian #nationalism.
The agenda prompted some right-wing Republicans to condemn or pull out of the event.

“We’re seeing a shift of what conservatism looks like,
and at the lower levels, they’re testing how extreme it can get,”
said Robert Futrell, a sociologist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas who studies political extremism.
“The goal is to capture local Republican Party infrastructure and positions and own the party, turning it to more extremist goals.”

Frequently, those aims include pushing back against broader LGBTQ+ acceptance, downplaying the nation’s history of racism and the lingering disparities caused by it, stemming immigration, and falsely claiming that America was founded as a Christian nation and that its laws and institutions should thus reflect conservative evangelical beliefs.

With 2.2 million people, Tarrant County is Texas’ most significant remaining battleground for Democrats and Republicans.
When the county voted for Beto O’Rourke for U.S. Senate in 2018 and Joe Biden for president in 2020,
many political observers suspected the end was nigh for the era of Republican dominance in the purple county.

Two years later, voters elected the most hard-line Tarrant County leader in decades.
After two years under O’Hare’s leadership, voters in November will decide two races between Republican allies of O’Hare and their Democratic opponents.
The election of both Democrats would put O’Hare into the minority.

The changes in county leadership have been dramatic, said O’Hare’s Republican predecessor, #Glen #Whitley, who served as Tarrant County judge from 2007 until retiring in 2022.
Whitley said O’Hare has implanted an “us vs. them” ideology that has increasingly been mainstreamed on the right.
“They no longer feel like they have to compromise,” said Whitley, who recently endorsed Democratic Vice President #Kamala Harris for president and U.S. Rep. Colin #Allred of Texas in the U.S. Senate race.
“You either vote with these people 100% of the time, or you’re their enemy.”

  13. Here in #Texas, the two Senate candidates… #Allred & #CarnivalCruz … have been running ads against each other. And I noticed something.

At the start or end of every Allred ad, he states "I'm Colin Allred, and I approved this message", but Cruz NEVER does so during his ads.

Does that mean the ads for him that I'm seeing are not from his campaign and don't have his approval? 🤨

It seems like a convenient way for Cruz to claim, "I never approved of that ad" if one should backfire on him. #Weasel

  16. @GottaLaff
#CarnivalCruz has been running these wildly offensive ads here in #Texas attacking #Allred's support for #Trans #KIDS (yes, he's running ads that will only encourage the bullying of CHILDREN.)

The ads say, #CollinAllred wants boys in girl's locker rooms. Boys in girl's bathrooms. And boys competing against girls in girl's sports."

The ads suggest no girl is capable of beating a transgender "boy" in any sport, when in fact the opposite is true. Trans kids are at a HUGE disadvantage.

  17. Democratic leaders are telling their party's biggest donors that keeping Montana's Senate seat blue is a real challenge.
However, they are planning to go on offense in Florida to retain their majority.

    Why it matters:
Without Montana, the math for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to keep his job gets very difficult.

But Democrats are signaling they want to expand the playing field and be in a position to steal Republican seats in states like #Florida.
-- Yes, it's still red, but former President Trump isn't expected to win by double digits.

They are also eyeing #Texas, where a recent poll has Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) up by three points against Rep. #Colin #Allred (D-Texas).

    Driving the news:

Officials acknowledged Sen. #Jon #Tester (D-Mont.) is down in the polls, but party strategists still see a path for him to defy the odds and win, just like Sen. Susan Collins of Maine did on the Republican side in 2020.

"It sounds like Gary Peters is thinking about abandoning Jon Tester," NRSC spokesperson Philip Letsou told Axios. "No matter what Democrats do, the NRSC will do whatever it takes to ensure Ted Cruz and Rick Scott defeat the radical liberals Chuck Schumer and his billionaire allies have propped up against them."

    The intrigue:
Republicans held their donor retreat just up the coast in Sea Island, Georgia, where the National Republican Senatorial Committee explained why they are eyeing a 52-seat majority.

At both events, there was a mixture of hope and fear.

In addition to Montana, there were concerns about #Ohio, where Sen. #Sherrod #Brown (D-Ohio) faces a tough re-election in a state Trump could carry by eight or nine percentage points.

The most optimistic pitch the Democratic donors received was from #Tennessee state Rep. #Gloria #Johnson, their party's nominee to defeat Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) in a race the Cook Political Report is rating a "solid R."

    What we're hearing:
Democrats are contemplating a late blitz in the Florida Senate race, where Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla) has just a two-point lead over former Rep. #Debbie #Mucarsel-#Powell in the latest public poll.

While air time hasn't been officially booked, Democratic sources tell us they expect the DSCC to make a splash in Florida in the coming weeks.

From Labor Day to Election Day, Democrats have spent or reserved some $5.6 million in advertising in Florida, according to AdImpact.

Over the same period, Republicans are at $4.4 million, but Scott's campaign likes to buy week to week, meaning they could pump more money into the race if they feel it's warranted.

  22. Democrats have a choice: Do they expand the Senate map?

Republicans’ acute Senate candidate-quality problem has come back to haunt them.

In a cycle in which Democratic-held seats in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Montana were up for grabs,
the GOP managed to field candidates ranging from mediocre to dismal (e.g., Kari Lake in Arizona)
-- and is in deep trouble in all but one.

These Republican cranks are proving no match for wily incumbents such as
    Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio)
and talented House members making a run for the Senate
(e.g., Rep. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona).

At this point, Democrats are feeling comfortable (although not complacent) about all but Montana.

Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), running for his fourth term, managed to stay afloat in a deep-red state even in 2012,when President Barack Obama ran double digits behind Mitt Romney there.

🆘 This cycle, however, polling at the end of August showed Tester down several points, prompting several analysts to shift the race to “Lean Republican.”

And Montana looms large in this cycle.

With Sen. Joe Manchin III (I-W.Va.) leaving the Senate, 🔥Democrats will lose control if Tester loses,
even if they hold all of the other Republican-targeted states
    — unless they can pick up another seat somewhere else.

Democrats have some big decisions to make.

Tester famously closes strongly and certainly could still win.
Spending heavily on TV ads and turnout might be enough.

But some analysts and party activists are looking for backup paths to the majority

Remarkably, Senate GOP incumbents in Florida, Texas and Nebraska have only tiny leads in recent polls
(e.g., two percentage points in deep-red Nebraska),
a shocking result in states that have voted strongly Republican in recent years.

Incumbent Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a lackluster candidate who has not had a serious challenger, now faces independent candidate #Dan #Osborn.
She is breaking a promise to serve just two terms.

Osborn is “a union leader and Navy veteran hoping that a nontraditional background can help him overperform in the state’s rural areas and with blue-collar voters,” according to the Cook Political Report.

Moreover, “The super PAC Retire Career Politicians
    — which is backed by the Democratic group Sixteen Thirty Fund
    — has already spent nearly $1.4 million on TV ads, which goes a long way in an inexpensive state like Nebraska,” Cook explains.

“Their first ad in early August emphasized Osborn comes from the working class and pitches him as uniquely positioned to fight for economic relief.”

Some additional Democratic investment in Nebraska appears to be a cost-effective backup plan for Democrats. A modest expenditure wouldn’t require significant (if any) diversion of funds from Montana.

    Two other races are dicier.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) has a slight lead in most polls over Rep.
    Colin #Allred (D-Tex.)
    — a dynamic candidate, a hawk on the border and fourth-generation Texan
    — whom former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) endorsed.

A recent Morning Consult poll had Allred up by one point.

That brings us to 🔸Florida, where Republican Sen. Rick Scott faces Democrat #Debbie #Mucarsel-#Powell.

The latest Emerson poll shows her down by just one point, another by just four points.

Both are in the margin of error.

And those polls come at a time when Scott is vastly outspending her.

  27. #CarnivalCruz has been running this WILDLY offensive ad against #CollinAllred that almost certainly is going to incite #bullying & #violence against #trans #KIDS, claiming #Allred "can't tell the difference between boys & girls" and "wants boys to use the same bathroom as girls". 😒

  28. Democratic Representative #Colin #Allred is narrowly trailing GOP incumbent Senator Ted Cruz in Texas' U.S. Senate race, according to a new poll.
❌Cruz was first elected to the Senate in 2012 and is known as a staunch conservative, routinely drawing the ire of Democrats.
✅Allred, a former professional football player who has served in the House of Representatives since 2019, had raked nearly $42 million to go up against the $40 million raised by the Republicanincumbent as of July.
Polls have consistently shown Cruz leading Allred, and Cook Political Report ranks the race as "likely" to be a Republican victory in November.
♦️However, Democrats are holding out hope that they can flip the seat, which would also give them a significant boost in their bid to maintain control of the Senate.
New polling published on Friday by Emerson College/The Hill shows a relatively tight race, showing Allred down against Cruz within the survey's margin of error.

The Texas Democrat picked up a notable endorsement from former Representative Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Republican who has become a staunch critic of former President Donald Trump and his GOP supporters.

"Vote for Colin Allred," Liz Cheney told attendees during an interview at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Friday.

"We need people who are honorable public servants, and in this race that is Colin Allred, so I'll be working on his behalf."

  36. 🚨 New polls show Ted Cruz is up just 3 points on #Colin #Allred in the #Texas Senate race.

Colin Allred is a true champion of progressive values.
As a civil rights attorney and former NFL player, he knows what it means to fight for justice and equality.
He's dedicated his life to serving others and has the experience and passion to make a real difference in Washington.

But we know that 💥defeating Ted Cruz won't be easy. 💥
He's been able to hold onto his seat for far too long, using every dirty trick in the book to stay in power.

That's why we need your help, now more than ever.

We're humbly asking: will you kick in $25 now to help fund our grassroots movement to defend the Senate this November?

If Colin Allred wins, it virtually guarantees a Democratic Senate majority.

  43. Rep. #Maxwell #Frost (D-Fla.) on Monday endorsed Prince George’s County Executive #Angela #Alsobrooks over fellow Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) in the closely watched Democratic Senate primary in Maryland.

Frost adds to the growing divide among House Democrats, who are split in their support for Alsobrooks and for Trone ahead of the May primary.

The Democratic nominee will face a tough general election fight against former Maryland Gov. Larry #Hogan (R), the popular moderate whose late entry into the race has presented a curveball for Democrats.

“I’m supporting Angela for U.S. Senate because she’s spent her career truly listening to people and coming up with innovative solutions to benefit the community. The people closest to the problem are often closest to the solution,” Frost said in the endorsement announcement on Monday.

“Angela and I share a similar passion for people and for a society that’s safe and equal for all of us,” Frost continued.

“When she gets to the Senate, she will join me in the fight to #end #gun #violence, she will work to #expand #healthcare access so that those who are sick can get well without going broke, she will fight the climate crisis by working for a #Green #New #Deal and she will fight for #reproductive #Justice.
I’m all in with Angela because she’ll be all in for us.”

Frost’s endorsement comes days after Alsobrooks secured a high-profile endorsement from Rep. Jamie #Raskin (D-Md.).

Alsobrooks has also secured endorsements from former House Majority Leader Steny #Hoyer (D-Md.) along with the rest of the House Maryland Democratic delegation except for Trone, himself, and Rep. C.A. Dutch #Ruppersberger.

Alsobrooks also has the support of Gov. Wes #Moore (D) and Lt. Gov. Aruna #Miller (D).

  46. Super Tuesday live:

Currently, US representative #Colin #Allred, a former NFL player and three-term congressman, is leading in the Democratic primary over state senator Roland Gutierrez.

Either of them will have an uphill battle in November. No Democrat has won a statewide office in Texas in 30 years, but after #Ted #Cruz won with a narrow margin in 2018, Democrats believe he could be vulnerable.
A victory in Texas would be a boon in their quest to maintain their narrow majority in the Senate.
