#Moodle developers should try out the #MDL_code plugin for #VSCode (or in my case #vscodium)

It has a long list of features but I was just wowed by its plugin wizards. I was about to create the files to make my #aitext question type (Which uses AI Systems like #ChatGpt) compatible with the Moodle mobile app.

I right clicked on the db folder, selected the new file option and with no future dialog it produced the skeleton of the required file as in the animation below.

An open source project like #Moodle is a collaborative and cooperative venture. I have tested a prompt from my #Moodle #AIText quetstion type on a Raspberry Pi5 with 16GB of ram and the Google Gemma4e2b model. it took around 30 seconds to the generate a response (see attached video).

I will now work on running it with #Moodlebox to test performance with the two running on the same machine.

I was testing my #aitext #moodle question type recently using #OpenAI and one of their recent models. I was finding the response rather slow.

I then switched to inference by #Groq (note the q) using OpenAI's gpt-oss-120b and the response was much, much faster and the quality was good.

These latest experiments with Groq have cost me 2 US cents so far.

I have been checking various #AI #LLM systems with #Moodle #AIText to evaluate the correctness of programming code. Students would submit trivial amounts of code and it would point out errors such as missing braces or parenthesis.

The results are wildly inconsistent across multiple systems. It will give an accurate evaluation on one submission and then overlook an error that a casual human observer would spot on the next.

Tested against #OpenAI, #ChatGPT Google Gemini, Anthropic & others.

It is always a pleasure to get a well asked question on one of my #Moodle plugins. This question was about my #AIText question type which uses an external #AI #LLM to generate feedback on students free text responses. On a side note I have found #Google #Gemini works at least as well or better than #OpenAI #ChatGPT models.

It was an issue I had not documented until now and as many people use it for language learning, it matters.

I have been thinking about how to allow more flexible prompting for my #Moodle #AIText question type. At the moment the prompt entered into the editing form is “wrapped”, which limits what a question author can do. I have created a github wiki page that proposes a “raw” mode to allow full flexibility for more experienced developers.

I have been exploring self hosting the LLM for my #moodle #aitext question types I have experimented with on premise hosting (my spare room to be precise) and a cloud service called https://www.runpod.io.

The cloud hosting has so far cost me around $USD7.0 since 26th December. It provides 1 x Nvidia V100 FHHL 6 vCPU 31 GB RAM, and the response time is probably usable with the question type. Other similar hosting services are available.
