#WendellBerry played an outside role in my life,. I first encountered his writings thanks to a fellow pedicab drivers recommendation back in 2001, and have since read many of his books of essays, poetry, and fiction.

There is much I could say about him and his influence on my thinking, but the two most important things were his valuing of place and one's connection to it, as well as his idea that it is always easier to oppress people that you don't see, which is why societies and institutions that get really big, are also very dangerous. (I.e. his attacks on industrial-scsle capitalism in the USA and industrial-scale communism in the USSR were spot on)

P.S. I did have some points of disagreement with Wendell, particularly on the subject of human sexuality, however I will also say that he changed his views (positively) in some ways late in life, which I appreciated.

  2. The #neolithic #agrarian revolution converted us from a mostly peaceful hunter/gatherer community to the most extremely violent agrarian culture ever seen. We've been trying to figure out how to get back to the old ways for our entire existence always knowing something was wrong but never being able to put our finger on what it was. #Anarchism

  4. "The persistence of peasantry in the Global South and imperialism’s necessity to integrate it into its accumulation network has given birth to a new agrarian question. This question centers around policies and efforts employed by imperialist countries to pressurize countries of the Global South, through international institutions (WTO, World Bank, and IMF), to integrate their peasantry into globalized capital." #peasants #agrarian #politics

  6. "All We Want is the Earth. Land, Labour & Movements beyond Environmentalism" - sounds very promising

"This book traces a counter-history of modern #environmentalism from the 1960s to the present day. It focuses on claims concerning land, labour and social reproduction arising at important moments in the history of environmentalism made by #feminist, [#anticolonial], #Indigenous, #workers’ and #agrarian #movements."

  8. Every time I read Wendell Berry I find myself yelling internally about class analysis, colonialism, and white supremacy while wishing that he had a more substantive critique of capitalism. The man, in all his agrarian wisdom, seems to ever so slightly miss the forest for trees.

  9. “This modern mind sees only half of the horse-that half which may become a dynamo, or an automobile, or any other horsepowered machine. If this mind had much respect for the full-dimensioned, grass-eating horse, it would never have invented the engine which represents only half of him. The religious mind, on the other hand, has this respect; it wants the whole horse, and it will be satisfied with nothing less.”

  10. I'm a historian of modern Taiwan at the University of Washington Jackson School of International Studies, where I also help run the UW Taiwan Studies Program. My research is on the history of agrarian development in Taiwan and the Global South during the Cold War. I also comment on current events related to Taiwan and China.
