@sarahjamielewis somehow every software is currently changing into bloatware, spyware, trackingware, with "AI support", I hate that, luckily there are still small, manageable FOSS alternatives, but for how long?!

@patrickcmiller Avoid LG products. The term #malware would be better than #adware

The #LG [1] privacy / security debacle - where merely plugging in one of their monitors *silently* installs a spyware/adware application with system-level #privileges [2] and sets it to auto-start, also silently - reminded me of a question I've wondered about.
The last version of Windows that I ran was Win98, so I'm rather out-of-date on my knowledge. It now supports #cryptographically signing programs [3] so you can #authenticate the source. I gather things distributed by the Microsoft store are all signed this way, but also #software distributed independently by larger companies.
So my questions are:
a) are programs from different companies signed with those companies' keys? Or is everything signed with a #Microsoft key so you can't differentiate between sources?
b) can users blocklist particular #signing #keys? Or are these solely for Microsoft's benefit and only they can decide what keys are acceptable?Because if I was a #Windows user now, I would definitely want to #blocklist LG's signing key.
[1] Am I the only one who used to sell their stuff when they used their full name?
[2] Only with #Windows, natch.
[3] I'll start calling programs "apps" when I'm dead, thanks.

How-To Geek: LG monitors are installing adware, and its TVs are raising “eavesdropping” concerns. “LG display users are pushing back against two contentious policies. Some LG monitors are reportedly installing McAfee adware without users’ permission, while smart TVs have a new policy raising concerns about recording people for AI purposes.”

👀📺 Reports say LG monitors use Windows 11’s device app auto-install to push the “LG Monitor App Installer” (and ads like McAfee) when plugged in—without an install notification. I'm tired of the headlines about #lg monitors installing #adware on #windows.
The problem is that #microsoft made a system that lets vendors install random software when something gets plugged in.
OF COURSE someone is going to use it to install ads. Microsoft had to know this, TVs, computers, fridges, everything has ads now.
This is a Windows problem, not an LG problem.
Stop using Windows!
NO monitor can "install adware". Microsoft installs adware on its behalf.

Your monitor should display your PC, not install software on it without your consent.
Connecting some LG monitors prompts Windows Update to install an LG app without even asking for it. It then launches at startup and serves McAfee trial ads.

Okay, LISTEN UP
DO NOT BUY LG.
Not ANYTHING LG.
Not only are they actively spying on you, not only have they updated their TOS to include requiring you to NOTIFY GUESTS ABOUT WIRETAPPING LAW, on Windows they're pushing ADWARE through WINDOWS UPDATE along with their monitor drivers - including on OLD monitors.
Gamers Nexus has all the deets:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9uefFYe6bM
DO NOT BUY LG PRODUCTS.
GN had a three-year-old monitor get an "update" that was adware. It wasn't even part of their investigation. It just happened to come in while they were investigating.
DO NOT BUY LG PRODUCTS.

⚠️ DO NOT BUY: LG’s Spyware TVs, Monitors, and Wiretapping Concerns
The attached #video details the absolute #privacy horror of LG #television and #monitor products, that install #adware without consent, have #AI integration, and a horrible privacy policy..
> LG recently forced upon us an app install loaded with #McAfee adware through a #Windows update. We found that this has been happening to tons of users, made worse by LG's shady history with #TV's that instruct buyers to inform house visitors of third-party microphones in their living room. At no point in the adware or application install did LG or Microsoft ask us for consent or permission to install the software and enable its various permissions. On monitors ranging 1 day old in our office to 3 years old, we've been able to replicate these issues -- including on the LG 34GX900A-B that we just bought (and have now returned, following #spyware concerns).

From #GamersNexus: “DO NOT BUY: LG’s Spyware TVs, Monitors, and Wiretapping Concerns”
It’s long been established that LG TVs spy on their owners: reporting what’s on screen, and reporting about what’s in attached file systems. Now, LG monitors exploit the Windows driver installation system to install #spyware and #adware. As well as expanding #surviellance from TVs to monitors, the #malware is currently primarily advertising subscription software from supposed anti-malware company McAfee.
The terms imposed by LG after the sale purport that the owner of the TV consents not only to collection and resale of data about screen contents and files, but also that the owner and everyone else in the room consents to audio recordings of their voices being sent to LG and resold from them to #AI and #advertising companies.

Option 1: Don't buy LG
Option 2: Don't buy LG displays, especially if you are running WindowsAt this point, I don't know what the experience is on newer LG TVs where you do not connect it to the Internet via any means (wireless or wired).
I have C1 OLED where it's never been on the Internet since being unboxed at home. There are no nags when trying to use basic functionality such as switching between inputs and channels.

In addition, #Microsoft and #McAfee are in on it. A monitor is no longer one, if it comes with #adware. I'm curious if any of this occurs if not on #Windows. Comment section on #GamerNexus video shows folks around Europe taking action and reporting this to local privacy authorities.

"Im FAQ behauptet Microsoft nun auch, dass 8 GByte offenbar für gewöhnliche Arbeiten ausreichen" 😂 ja ne, is klar, Windows kommt mit 8 GByte Speicher aus 🥳
Ich erlebe das von Mo-Fr im Büro, was passiert, wenn Windows so wenig Speicher hat und ich mache nichts so besonders herausforderndes am Rechner.

📣🚨 Watch out, as 152 Chrome live wallpaper extensions have been sending users to ad-funded sites while making the traffic look like real Google search clicks.
The network has about 105,000 installs: https://hackread.com/chrome-live-wallpaper-extensions-ad-track-fake-search-clicks/
