#Amnesty calls for release of Palestinian Dr Hussam Abu Safia
Amnesty International has reiterated its call for the release of Dr Hussam Abu Safia, who has been held in Israeli detention without charge or trial for nearly 10 months after he was arrested at a northern Gaza hospital.
Abu Safia led Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza through an 85-day siege by Israeli troops during their offensive in the surrounding districts of Jabalia, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoon.

When troops raided the hospital on December 27, images showed Abu Safia, in his white doctor’s coat, walking out of the building through rubble-strewn streets towards an Israeli armoured vehicle to discuss the evacuation of patients.Abu Safia and dozens of others, including patients and staff, were arrested. He was not among the hundreds of Palestinian detainees and prisoners freed on Monday in exchange for 20 captives held by Hamas.

Who is Palestinian detainee Hussam Abu Safia?
Calls have been growing to release prominent Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safia, who has been in Israeli detention without charge for nearly 10 months.
Abu Safia, a paediatrician, was born on November 21, 1973, in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip. His family had been displaced in 1948 from the Palestinian town of Hamama in the Ashkelon district.

The family of Dr Hussam Abu Safia, who has been detained by Israel since December, says the doctor has lost 30kg (66 pounds) and is suffering from critical health conditions and being subject to inhumane treatment.

During an Israeli siege on the hospital in late October, an Israeli drone strike on the facility’s gate killed Abu Safia’s eight-year-old son, Ibrahim.Another Israeli drone strike on November 23 wounded Abu Safia as he was exiting the operating room.
Abu Safia was last seen on December 27 as he walked towards an Israeli tank through the rubble that remained after Israeli forces heavily bombarded the hospital.

The Israeli military has confirmed it is holding Kamal Adwan Hospital director Dr Hussam Abu Safia in custody, ABC News reports, citing a statement provided to the Australian network.
The Israeli military said in the statement that Abu Safia was “apprehended for suspected involvement in terrorist activities and for holding a rank in the Hamas terror organisation”.
Israeli authorities have provided no evidence of Abu Safia’s connection to Hamas.

Idris Abu Safia, the son of detained Dr Hussam Abu Safia, has issued an urgent appeal for the international community to intervene and secure his release before it’s too late.
“We urgently appeal to the international community to act for his release as he is detained by the occupation forces while performing his humanitarian duty,” he said in a video appeal.

The director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital, who Israel detained in a recent attack on the medical complex, is being kept at a controversial army base, Sde Teiman, which is also a detention facility.
The Israeli army confirmed on Saturday that it arrested the director as he was “suspected of being a Hamas terrorist operative” and the hospital was used as a “command and control centre.”

The director general of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Munir al-Bursh, said Abu Safia was severely beaten with batons and sticks by Israeli forces, who forced him to strip and put on clothes meant for prisoners.
It was the second time in as many months that Abu Safia had been detained by Israeli forces.
