In Arbroath an SNP hold, qualitatively the expected result given the political environment.
Heard rumblings that Aberdeen South may surprise us with a Tory win and that's exactly what we got. Massive Labour to Tory unionist vote swing.
So a warning to not extrapolate Labour success all over from Makerfield, and that the Tories aren't yet dead everywhere. Though there's very much local specifics here!

Counting is about to get underway, with results expected in the early hours of the morning. And unlike most by-elections, could change the history of the country.

Two SNP MPs resigned their seats after being elected to Holyrood, while Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham seeks a return to Parliament.

This Thursday, some miles north of Makerfield, another by-election is taking place on the same day, in Aberdeen South, which sees the Scottish National Party defending their seat against the Tories & Reform who seem to be more focussed on beating each other than the SNP....
In the end the Right parties are trying to make this a 'referendum on energy', not least because Aberdeen is an Oil & Gas city.
I'm sure my Scottish friends will have further insights.
