Can’t remember if I shared this here before or not, but here it is again. I was at Presque Isle Park in Marquette, Michigan on Lake Superior a couple months ago. The tiny leaves of the quaking aspens caught my eye and held my attention. I sat at a picnic table nearby for a long time, just listening to the water and the leaves fluttering in the breeze. It was the peace my heart and soul needed.
As an aside, the breakwall light is in the background. As teenagers, we’d walk out to it—first on easy cement, then jumping between large rocks with gaps between them. Once, my cousin dropped his camera into a gap. Some guys stopped to help, lying on the rocks and reaching down until one came up with a camera, his arm scratched and bleeding. Except—it wasn’t my cousin’s! It was a similar cheap camera, rusty and beat up from being down there who knows how long. OMG, what were the odds?

I missed the party on the Irvin last night here in Duluth as the John G. Munson arrived yesterday with limestone while museum ship William A. Irvin prepared to host a Thursday evening music concert on its deck, 6 August, 2026. Photo by David Schauer, who had to have his drone operating. Or actually had someone else get this one for him.

McCarthy and the Great Lakes Fleet’s John G. Munson, 6 August, 2026. Photos by … yours truly. I think the camera in my smartphone phone did alright but I sure wish the Nikon wasn’t waiting on parts. I think I’ll skip the 0400 arrival of the James L. Oberstar.😜
