  1. @Saket Our house rules documents #2097e are probably longer than the PHB by now, we've changed out the combat system, injury system, social encounter system, skill system, inventory system, background system, climbing system, lockpicking system, and a couple of dozens of spells. But since 5e is so modular we can still use the same classes, monsters, and modules.

We mostly play material made for older editions that I convert (right now we've been doing a AD&D adventure called Date of Expiration). One thing I always need to learn and relearn is to also convert over the XP values because older stuff's XP is all over the place.

Our campaign, #boatmode, is set in the Crowded Sea region of the Forgotten Realms; I have everything for 2e al-Qadim in hardcopy (and extras of Land of Fate, the best box). But we also heavily use Ghosts of Saltmarsh for 5e which I've ported over from Greyhawk to a li'l town between Jumlat and Gana named Safaq. We're 153 sessions in since we moved to this campaign setup and region; we've played other campaigns in the same continuity and on the same planet previously.
  2. New houserule for #2097e:

"When using the "proficiency swaps" from Tasha's, you can now get only two tool proficiencies from your type of being, total, combining swaps and intrinsic. If you get more, you can give them to other player characters. We want a lot of tool proficiencies in the party, but, we wanna divvy up the crafting spotlight. This only applies to tool proficiencies from your type of being, not to tool proficiencies from other sources."
  3. #boatmode, session 120 (and since last time I’ve been a player in the candlekeep campaign [we tpk’d, I’m rolling a wizard next] and in the under hollow hill game).

This was Witchlight 4. Very fun session. Sometimes it’s not the roleplaying part that’s fun but just the combat mechanics themselves ♥

(That’s a part of my #2097e game that’s radically different from 5e, but, it works! Apparently. Because I love it.)

  4. Why fights take a long time

Since Blades’ mechanic is as detailed as a conflict-level resolution mechanic (with multiple inputs [SIS position, SIS effect, special abilities, pushed help, pushed self, Devil’s Bargain], and several Fortune in the Middle factors such as Resist rolls), every roll, hmm, takes a good while. Every roll in Blades is like a whole fight in our D&D 5e game.

  5. Fragile Items

A fragile weapon breaks if you roll a natural four on the first attack in a round you make.

A fragile defensive item, such as a shield, break if you roll a natural four on the first defense roll in a round.

  6. @PaulCzege

I really enjoy when subsystems do have mechanical interaction. But, a game such as my #2097e which is a huge mess of mechanical interaction can still import and benefit from MOSAIC Strict compliant modules, and, maybe I can rewrite some of what I have as such.

An issue is that I’ve been thinking of diegetic mechanics as mechanical interaction too. (What @lumpley termed “cloud”. His “dice” I think of as symbolic mechanics.)

Does “You now have 10 dinars” or “You now have thirty sacks of wheat” count as mechanical interaction? I’ve been designing under the assumption that yes. But with my POV, MOSAIC Strict would’ve been inherently oxymoronic so obviously something else is going on.

  7. Loox like one of them will DM, using pretty much our existing house rule set #2097e . A taste of my own medicine wrt components for Light cantrips etc.

  8. @jens I want more of a clean slate. I have a huge #2097e palimpsest already

  9. Although #2097e itself (the gross & overwrought hybrid of D&D editions we use) actually worked fine today.

I was so disillusioned with my Introducing Late Night Fighting rules yesterday so I started the day off with a grid type system. And it worked fine for one battle but not the next. Here is what happened (@Halo you might be interested):

Hidi al-Dibh has an ability to protect people he is standing next to—monsters that attack them do so at disad. (That also really helped Abu Sabi survive vs those shadows!)

But in one of the previous fights, I don’t remember, not the birds, it was the one after that. The grid worked fine for the birds but then for centipedes? Something else? I don’t remember. Abu was like “That should be at disad because Hidi is standing next to them” — and that’s when I tossed the grid out and went and got the normal Introducing Late Night Fighting forms.

Because in Abu’s mind, Hidi was next to everyone, but on the grid, he wasn’t. That’s the problem with grids—trying to communicate about grids becames a bit like Battleship (“Sänka Skepp”), it becomes a bit ridiculous to do verbally.

Whereas it’s easy enough to say “OK, Hidi is in the same mêlée group as Aman and Ulysses” without having to keep track of exact positions♥

  10. I want to refactor my existing chase rules for #2097e to feel more natural and less like “we’re in a subgame now”.

I’m going from the three phases:

    1. Everyone announce speeds (using dash actions, monk bonus actions etc)
    2. Everyone fights normally, to the extent that they have actions left
    3. Everyone rolls dex or wis to hide/detect

    To:

Everyone fights and does actions normally. At end of each individual’s turn, they roll wis (if pursuer) or dex (if quarry).

The reason for this is that phasal systems work awfully (“free and clear” initiative was a horror show when our friend tried it when he was DMing).

Under the hood I need to suss out dashes etc “in advance” to what extent that’s possible. That’s right, three seconds after removing “players can dodge in advance” I’m readding “pretties can dash in advance”. Uh. This needs playtesting obv. And then factoring so I can codify what’s really going on.

  11. I put in the Hearts rule from Songbird

#2097e is such an elegant ball of mud. I have pasted more rules into there than I will ever be able to remember. I see a game that seems cool and I just paste in the cool stuff recklessly

  12. CW: CW: 1990s new age stuff

Leo - Water Raph - Fire Don - Air Mike - Earth.

Also the Man and the King got it wrong and Reed and Susan should switch elements. Susan is more water personality and Reed is more air.

    Water - emotional perception/integrity - cha/wis Fire - physical energy - dex/str Earth - physical integrity - con/str Air - physical perception - int/wis

We’ve been discussing elemental classification for spells on #2097e but is it really so hard to understand?

Does it lead? Water. (I follow rivers.) Does it do machines? Air. (I prevail through reason.) Is to cool but rude? Fire. (I burn for what I love.) Is it a party dude? Earth.

Period. In Helvetica. Any questions? Of course not.

I bless Ra, the fierce sun burning bright I bless Isis-Luna in the night I bless the air, the Horus-Hawk I bless the earth on which I walk♥♥

  13. Less intricate method of purchases and acquisitions https://idiomdrottning.org/limpa Wow, ten pages, I need to work on making it way less verbose. Or, keep this verbose version but make a quick reference sheet to use at the table.

  14. https://idiomdrottning.org/inventory

Inventory system totally revamped! No more filling in or counting up circles! No more dividing strength by three! No more “encumbrance budget”!

Easy! Just write in your stuff! Write, erase, move around to your heart’s content: every slot is marked with the minimum strength score to use it that slot.

  15. EricVulgaris wrote on his blog the following, re rulings (which he calls precedents):

I avoided writing these down— if we don’t remember a precedent, was it ever really a precedent? How important was that rule? It’s important to let your game evolve.

That’s a perspective that I’m going to have to think more about.

For me, coming up with the rulings is hard work and sometimes when we have had long breaks it’s nice to see the old rulings instead of having to redo all that math that I do when I make a ruling. I don’t have an innate talent for math stuff so I have to work hard to get it right.

And, also by writing the rulings down I can share them.

It’s also part of the social contract with the players. The reason I even play #2097e so rules-heavily in the first place is so that I don’t decide what happens, the system does—and for there to be trust in that system, the players need to have access to as much of it as possible.

But I do sometimes go through and delete old rule. BTW @Halo did you catch that the “you can spend your upcoming action to dodge” rule has been deleted?

  16. I had up to eight panels to fill on the DM screen (the GoS screen has 4 panels, and I need all four of those for boat stuff so want to make anything I add to that “liftable” so each panel I add means adding two pannels, the front and back.)

Here is my first draft of the first panel. It’s A4 but you need to cut off the rightmost 4 cm so the proports are more like US letter anyway.

Ideas I have for future panels include movement/hex-distance-time math, CR→XP math, item values→XP math, foraging and crafting stuff, the combining many encounter checks into one roll math thing, and maybe putting some of the most basic monster stats up on there, at least things relevant for 1st round of combat so I don’t have to look things up in the monster manual that they’re gonna one-shot anyway. Obv license and legalese are a li’l hard to fit on a DM screen. Veins and 5e are not owned by me is the sitch.

  17. Sometimes I make rules that I don’t know how to codify, I just write down the spirit of the law without having any idea to figure out the letter of it. As an example, players can create new characters but my ask is they don’t just do it to bring a bunch of new starting gear and starting coin into the party’s economy.

  18. Ugh I wanna create a hybrid domain system between Immortals Companion and An Echo, Resounding. I need ta hold off until Worlds Without Numbers come out, too, I guess. I wish Sine Nomine would go open source💔 I’m currently completely on AER (scaled up by 10× because the cities and troops I have are huge) for this kinda stuff in our #boatmode campaign, buuut I have populations and data to be able to switch over to RC/IC style WM.

On paper I like the RC style “war machine” rules, especially with the design choices made in Immortals Companion. I should maybe just app them up a bit or get some practice with them.

On the other hand, I like the domain actions from AER. RC/IC answers how they do things, but AER/SWN with the faction goals and very limited set of actions give me at least some guidance on what they do, and why.

What are some good practices for, uh, making open source clones out of non-free game texts? I just wanna create some domain actions and domain goals and more of an, uh…

I want the NPC factions’ actions to depend even less on DM whim and arbitration than they do in AER (and of course way less than they do in RC/IC where there depend fully on the DM puppeting them).

  19. Uh I started writing more posts in this thread but I ended up editing it all into a sprawling, unfocused blog post:

  20. Revising Turns

I was getting embarassed for my turn counting because torches were burning out so quickly. Looking in RC and Moldvay I realize that I can include movement and interaction in the same turn. Which is gonna mean more than double the amount of actions per light time for my dorks, and way less math and counting for me.

  21. Aaaaand now I found that I had already gone through that exact same process a year ago and ended up not modifying that exact spell from the RAW back then either. RIP my memory. #2097e #TombOfAnnihilation
