What does Karl Marx mean by the alienation of labour?
Before the rise of #capitalism and the industrial revolution, certain types of labour could be artisanal whereas industrialization turned them "assembly line" style.
Consider a shoemaker. A shoemaker had this idea of a shoe design and he/she would craft it from start to finish. The entire shoe was made by the same person. The shoemaker had creative agency over his/her labour. The shoemaker could also keep the fruits of his/her labour, the crafted shoes in this example: to sell them or to wear them himself/herself. The shoemaker also had agency over when to start and end the workday.
Other examples are blacksmiths crafting swords or tailors crafting clothing. They poured, through their labour, an essence of themselves into the resulting property, the fruits of their labour. Labour could be a source of pride, even enjoyable. People would rather buy your shoes/swords/bread/jewelry/… than someone else's.
Industrialization alienated the worker from that essence. With labour changing from being artisanal to "assembly line" style, the worker now was just a cog in the machine. There often is no more creative agency, you just do what you're told by some manager, and you don't get to keep the fruits of your labour, the property.
The time spent at the workplace is now generally loathed, and workers now feel free only in their leisure time, outside of work.
Consider a software engineer. Some product manager has the creative agency and wants to add "AI" or other bullshit to the product. Every self-respecting programmer speaks up, saying this is a bad idea, but they have to implement it against their ideals anyway. They don't ultimately get to make the decisions. They start to hate their job and burn out. They feel that tasteless product managers with shitty convictions and morals ruin their beautiful, elegant, artisanal code. Corporate software developers are alienated from their labour.
This was of course already true in car manufacturing where every worker produces just one small part of the product, not the entire product.
Understanding #Marxism is important even for the very comfortably paid programmers in Big Tech who tend to despise Marxism due to capitalist propaganda.
