Really great article.
One of my daughters is in the Forest Service in the Oregon wilderness. She has worked in fire towers and fought wildfires near Mount Hood. Her housemate, another young woman, was a helicopter pilot who flew into fire zones swinging multi-ton buckets of water scooped from lakes, through smoke so thick they couldn't see out.
When your life depends on help from above, you don't care what pronouns they use.

Off an alley beside the old courthouse in Staunton, Virginia.
Around the corner is a tiny used bookstore where you can browse the shelves with books of local artists and historians. Selections made, you ring a bell and the owner comes downstairs, sleepy from a nap, and makes change from an antique coin belt dispenser, like a carnival barker, except he's well read and compliments your taste in books, because he personally chose all these books himself.

Before WWII, these woods were logged by hand saw, axe, and draft horse. Felled trees were limbed and dragged slowly to a small steam-powered mill, then slabbed and stacked in a rough shed.
The mill is long gone. Only foundation stones remain – low stacked cairns in a grid, lichen covered, neolithic.
Shallow ruts made by hoof and heavy logs still wander ridge lines as trails. The forest has regrown around them.

Lightning by Starlight
Evening thunderstorms are common in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Land heats up all day. Moist ocean air flows in and up into clouds, a thin band of storms just inland. After sunset the flow reverses. Land cools and air flows back over the warm ocean, sweeping storms with it. Small and isolated, but sometimes intense.
A 30 second exposure caught star trails and a lightning flash in one shot, sea and cloud aglow.
