  6. Before WWII, these woods were logged by hand saw, axe, and draft horse. Felled trees were limbed and dragged slowly to a small steam-powered mill, then slabbed and stacked in a rough shed.

    The mill is long gone. Only foundation stones remain – low stacked cairns in a grid, lichen covered, neolithic.

    Shallow ruts made by hoof and heavy logs still wander ridge lines as trails. The forest has regrown around them.
