  1. Fred Jackson - Hootin' 'n' Tootin'

Although this comes from 1962 (Jackson's only session as a leader), it sounds more like later Blue Note, given the soul-jazz focus.

Regardless, lots to enjoy across the two sides.

Features Jackson (tenor), Earl Van Dyke (organ), Willie Jones (guitar), Sam Jones (bass), Wilbert Hogan (drums).

  2. Squeeze - Sweets from a Stranger

Here's where we all found out that Squeeze *could*, indeed, make a less-than-stellar album.

Includes the great song Black Coffee in Bed, and nothing else really worth mentioning.

They'd break up after this, and get back together a year or so after...and put out more OK stuff until recently, when they suddenly got their mojo back...and were rewarded with lackluster sales.

    The universe is unfair.

  7. Illinois Jacquet - Swing's the Thing

1956 and Jacquet is making a great case for why Swing should get more respect. Just a whole lot of energetic fun, and when the tempo slows down, some beautiful ballad playing.

With Jacquet (tenor), Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Jimmy Jones (piano), Herb Ellis (guitar), Ray Brown (bass), and Jo Jones—no, not Philly Joe Jones—on drums.

  12. West Montgomery - Full House

Meeting of some greats here - Montgomery (guitar), joined by the Wynton Kelly Trio (Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums)), along with Johnny Griffin (tenor).

Recorded live in 1962 at Tsubo in Berkeley, California—a hot set (supposedly the crowd had to endure some repeats to get a good take, but they've certainly retained their enthusiasm).

  13. Immanuel Wilkins Quartet - Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol. 1

I'd love to say I was there...but I was not. However, just before (May 11, 2025 - this was recorded on May 15 & 16 2025), the Quartet came to the Groton Hill Music Hall, and I *was* there. They were great, and this captures the energy and creativity they showed that night.

Mostly Wilkins originals, with one Alice Coltrane song.

  14. Ivy - Guestroom

2015 (? - I forget) re-release of Guestroom, Ivy's 2002 album of covers. Songs from The Cure, Steely Dan, the Go-Betweens, etc.

Always bittersweet listening to them. Good album, though.

  19. John Scofield Quartet - Meant to Be

Since I just saw Scofield a few nights ago, I thought it would be appropriate to listen to this recent rerelease of a 1991 session.

This was Bill Stewart's (drums) first appearance with Scofield, and they've been working together ever since.

Joe Lovano (tenor) is there, too, and Marc Johnson (bass).

    Great all around.

  24. Silversun Pickups - Swoon

Little catch-up from a few weeks ago.

2nd album from the Smashing Pumpkins...oh I mean Silversun Pickups.

It's actually a good LP, and if you're not going to kill your idols, why not embrace them?

  25. Various - Help(2)

War Child Records has fortunately/unfortunately put out another compilation of tracks by a serious A-list of current artists, all recorded last November over a week at Abbey Road, under the supervision of James Ford. Includes an Oasis 7" as well.

Proceeds go to War Child. Good music for a good cause.

  26. Squeeze - Trixies

A going concern for 40+ years, briefly "popular" (e.g. Black Coffee in Bed), always consummate craftsmen, the Difford/Tilbrook partnership actually started here, when Difford was 19 and Tilbrook was 16.

Yes, those precocious brats wrote a song cycle about Trixies, a bar, and the characters therein. But the songs were complex enough they couldn't play them.

Cassette found, dusted off, skills now present, and here we are.
