CW: UK Politics; Tampon Tax rip off
Remember the sexist absurdity that was the #TamponTax? ✅
Remember when campaigners successfully fought for its abolition? ✅
Remember when retailers passed on the benefit of the VAT cut to customers? ❌
Wait. They didn't? Well, they bloody well should (pun intended)

CW: UK Politics; Kwasi Kwarteng
If I had crashed the British economy with my first ever speech as chancellor, I simply would not attempt a comeback tour within a month of being sacked
(This is all I really needed to say. I’m going to try to ignore him from now on)
-
CW: UK Politics; Kwasi Kwarteng
The thing that strikes me most about the #Kwarteng interview is his complete lack of humility
He takes almost no responsibility for the chaos he and Truss caused
If I had been so utterly, humiliatingly, devastatingly, publicly terrible at my job, I would just… go away. Probably forever
This guy’s attempting a comeback tour within a month! His arrogance is off the charts 🤯
-
CW: UK Politics; Kwasi Kwarteng
Kwarteng reckons “The only thing that [Sunak & Hunt] could possibly blame us for is the interest rates and interest rates have come down and the gilt rates have come down”
Because he was sacked and she resigned!
Meanwhile, the chaos has meant higher mortgage costs for millions

CW: UK Politics; Child Poverty
There are 800,000 children in England living in poverty who don’t currently qualify for #FreeSchoolMeals
The Food Foundation’s #FeedTheFuture campaign calls for the urgent extension of free lunches to all children from families on Universal Credit
There is a template letter to send to your MP & other campaign resources on their website👇

Labour’s commitment to onshore windfarms is particularly notable on the day that the chair of the Committee on Climate Change, Lord Deben, told ITV that Govt must change its policy on onshore windfarms to achieve net zero

“A Labour government would rip up the planning rules restricting the expansion of #OnshoreWindfarms as part of a plan to make the UK a clean energy superpower”
This is in stark contrast to Sunak’s reinstatement of the ban on new onshore projects earlier this week
Good. We haven’t got time for NIMBYism

CW: UK News; Tampon Tax rip off
To be clear, the #EndTamponTax campaign was not about cost (IMO) - it was about ending the sexist absurdity of taxing menstrual products as if they were ‘non-essential’ items
But retailers cheering equality publicly whilst ripping off consumers secretly is Not On

CW: UK News; Tampon Tax rip off
It takes a pretty wicked cynicism to pocket the change from the #EndTamponTax campaign win - but it looks like that's what retailers have done
Time to stop profiteering from our periods 🤬
Great research from @danneidle to uncover this scandal 💪

CW: UK Politics; House of Lords
Can we discuss the #HouseOfLords?
It feels like we’ve been at it forever - I'm sure I did a debate on abolition at school, some 30 years ago
It’s a bloated, anti-democratic anachronism, where cronyism & grubby politicking are clad in robes and given life-long powers
Johnson’s #ResignationHonours list, packed with donors, lackeys & ‘bootlickers’ only emphasises this
But from a pragmatic perspective, what does the future look like? Abolition or reform?
-
CW: UK Politics; PMQs
“I obviously regret appointing someone who has had to resign in these circumstances” has pretty strong “I’m sorry you caught me cheating” vibes, doesn’t it?

CW: UK Politics; Right To Protest
Did Suella Braverman misrepresent the law in her speech to the police today? 🤔
She said “Free speech and the right to protest do not entitle people in a democracy like ours to break the law”
But I don’t believe that is what the Court of Appeal said, when she referred the point of law to them as Attorney General following the acquittal of the Colston 4 …

CW: UK Politics; Resignation honours
The Times is reporting that all 4 MPs on Johnson’s resignation honours list - Nadine Dorries, Alister Jack, Nigel Adams, Alok Sharma - are all planning to “defer” their peerages until the next election
But this is totally unprecedented - how can you be both a member of the Commons *and* the Lords at the same time?
If Sunak lets them do this, but the King objects, well - we’ll have ourselves a little constitutional crisis 🚨
-
CW: UK Politics; Resignation honours
Have you seen the leaked #ResignationHonours list by #BorisJohnson?
It apparently includes peerages for:
🙄 4 MPs - #NadineDorries #AlokSharma #AlistairJack #NigelAdams
😱 4 Johnson aides, including 2 who would become the youngest life peers IN HISTORY
😡 Paul Dacre, former Daily Mail editor
💸 Tory donors, David Ross & Stuart Marks
😫 Shaun Bailey, failed London mayoral candidate

CW: UK Politics; Resignation honours
Johnson’s #ResignationHonours list is packed with cronies, lackeys & ‘bootlickers’ (to use the word of one Tory MP)
These people will enter the Lords FOR LIFE
They will join our legislature; they will form part of our constitutional fabric
And why? Because our disgraced former Prime Minister says so?
Once again, our unwritten constitution, with its reliance on “good chaps”, has shown just what happens when the people with power are anything but

CW: UK Politics
Sunak/ No 10 didn’t want to be seen to be sacking Gavin Williamson in response to political or media pressure - worrying that “setting a precedent by sacking Williamson would have difficult implications when future ministers were in a tricky spot”
Let’s hope so, eh? Maybe it’s just the lawyer in me but I LOVE a good precedent 👀
