  1. We collaborate with our collegial nonprofit Gigafact to create Fact Briefs on matters of #ClimateChange and #ClimateScience. Gigafact's specific mission is to help journalists supply condensed, easy-to-apply #debunkings of common (and usually intentionally fostered) misunderstandings of how Earth's climate functions, and how we're changing that.

But we all run into #ClimateBunk, and these treatments are a handy place to point folks to better information.

    Recent releases:

    * Has Arctic sea ice recovered?
    * Is global warming actually happening?
    * Are surface temperature records reliable?
    * Is the greenhouse effect still debated among climate scientists?

These are all settled questions, many of which Skeptical Science has addressed more than a decade ago-- but Gigafact chooses topics based on fresh information and although it may beggar belief they're still "current" in the public mind.

"Collect them all" at the link! Join our mailing list if you want to be kept up to date (we _never_ share email addresses).

  3. I am still #skeptical of the technology, mostly because it is so easily misused or abused. This is computing’s heavy machinery that consumes stupid-huge quantities of electricity and requires hazardous chemicals to stay properly lubricated. Its promoters want everyone to use it for everything without the specialized training, safety precautions, and enforced regulatory backstops that it clearly needs.

  5. Too important to miss: with ideological forces in the US federal government now actively misleading US citizens on climate change, the American Meteorological Society and another ad hoc group of scientists explain exactly how US citizens are being deceived.

We make it easy to find both reports in our latest weekly #ClimateResearch roundup, along with the usual weekly torrent of what we've broken, how we broke it, and how we're going to make repairs.

  6. "Technical difficulties" in dealing with #ClimateChange and how to address them dominate our highlighted research reports this week.

    * Glacier Geoengineering May Have Unintended Consequences for Marine Ecosystems and Fisheries

    * In tech we trust: A history of technophilia in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) climate mitigation expertise

    * Dead-end pathways: Conceptualizing, assessing, avoiding [about counterproductive "mitigation theater"]

As well, a fascinating behind-the-scenes report on #ClimateModels:

    * How Climate Model Developers Deal With Bugs

Nice quote: "It’s very scientific activity because you form an idea of what’s making the model misbehave. You develop hypotheses. I think of a test and do it and that’s why the bug hunting is fun."

  8. "Climate skeptics" are a thing of the past?

    No. That's why we're here.

Bogus #ClimateSkepticism comes in various flavors. Many so-called skeptics are indeed cranks but others come in the passive form, their basis of doubt or disbelief mired in innocent ignorance.

Innocent ignorance can be fostered, cultivated-- and that's exactly what's happened over the course of decades in connection with #ScientificConsensus on #ClimateChange.

  13. #ScientificConsensus with Dr John Cook

Misconceptions about consensus in science abound (and are sometimes encouraged). It it a popularity contest? Mindless conformity? If not those, what? To answer these and many other questions, Melanie Trecek-King - who runs the "Thinking is Power" website - talked with John Cook about the scientific consensus in general and about his study finding 97% consensus about human-cased climate change in particular.

  18. When happening upon a neat article, explaining what a #ScientificConsensus is, we realized, that - even though we have a lot of material about the #consensus - we were lacking an explainer about what a scientific consensus actually is. We have now remedied this and created a page with an explainer and an accompanying glossary entry which will point our readers towards that page with a small pop-up-box.

  23. Maintaining #ScientificIntegrity in a hostile environment-- written for scientists by scientists .

Classification and responses to threat levels are not only useful for academics but also helpful for the rest of us to understand how hard choices must be made in arduous circumstances.

''The Anti-Autocracy Handbook is a call to action, resilience, and collective defence of democracy, truth, and academic freedom in the face of mounting authoritarianism. It tries to provide guidance to scholars navigating the growing global trend of democratic backsliding and autocratization, in particular in the U.S.''

There are a couple of Skeptical Science alumni in the author pool.

  26. Our volunteer Bärbel Winkler filed her daily report from the 2023 EGU General Assembly.

The post includes a laundry list of nuances and subtleties in communicating science to the general public in contexts fraught with hazard, risk and public policy implications, from the session "Beyond SciComm 101: what is meaningful & ethical communication when it comes to the climate crisis?"

Shouting loudly is a bit too simple? It seems so.

  27. In her usual mode of wearing many hats our volunteer Bärbel Winkler reports in from EGU General Assembly 2023, where yesterday she and co-volunteer John Mason presented "Adding plain language summaries to rebuttals on Skeptical Science" as part of the all-day workshop "Science and Society: Science Communication Practice, Research, and Reflection."

A wealth of experience and case examples for science communicators in the abstracts alone. Click and learn!
