  2. New #Gentoo Distribution Kernel batch went stable just now, with fixes for both variants of #DirtyFrag for the newest kernels, and fix + mitigation for older versions where no fix exists yet.

Thanks to @thesamesam for the patches!

  3. First impressions of today:
    - Gentoo remains amazing
    - Why tf is there no true Wayland dwm?
    - Librewolf is the Firefox Firefox should have been.
    - Adding yourself to the pipewire group at 06:31 AM is totally acceptable.

  7. I tried to update the kernel on my laptop to 6.18.26, and it didn't boot, while 6.18.18 had been working fine.

It took me hours to find out what was going on: It seems that there is a binary package for sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-6.18.26, and my portage settings are to prefer binary pkgs if available. It still just contains the source code, so I don't know why it exists....

My laptop needs a patched kernel, and since patches aren't applied to binary packages, it didn't work.

  12. Pt. 2 of the Gentoo install report.
There was a bit of functionality lacking, so i decided to switch profile (from barebone to desktop OpenRC), which is pretty straightforward. My 6.8 of dwm was pretty vanilla, only all required patches were there, so i've started on editing the config.def.h, also good. And the first kernel update arrived, testing ugrd and automatic initramfs update. Well, it didn't, obviously 🤣
I could, eventually, through my carefully written-down install command. I'll put it in an alias. And then I spent an exorbitant amount of time on Gruvbox and slstatus. Very well spent!

  13. Geek speak: today, Labor Day, we are all free here. What did I do?
Reinstall Gentoo, openrc, uefi, xfs, encrypted rootfs and using ugrd as initramfs.
Making notes about that now slowly turns into a personal quick reference guide for such an install. I've done around 20 Gentoo installs so far, always reinventing the wheel. Many, many ah yes moments 😂
Installing xorg et all now (somehow I didnt dare to go the xlibre way yet), it has been a great day, very well spent!

  18. @chuso Probably worth mentioning the related bug on #Gentoo Bugzilla.

Looks like @thesamesam is well and truly onto it.

Also for #Debian users, at the moment they're working on fixes: security-tracker.debian.org/tr

Edit: Nothing seen on the #AlpineLinux front, I guess we'll hear from @alpinelinux in due course.

  23. I can honestly tell you that, after spending months, possibly years on the Wayland side, going back to Xorg is indeed sheer hell. I got my big-bear suit out and hammered myself through it all, but man, what a chore.
Problem: dwm is so fucking good, patched et al, and Larry is up and running again. Hard to beat that. Tomorrow: all things setup. But st and rofi are already online, so i'm looking forward to that klutzing.

  27. Sometimes it makes sense to act smart rather than brute-force.

For example, when Intel makes another #MKL release and you get version like "2026.0.0", and you need to figure out the remaining "-n" suffix for the .deb packages. And you really don't want to start a Debian container to figure that out.

Well, you could just keep brute-forcing until you find the right number. Or you can figure out that the index URL is apt.repos.intel.com/oneapi/dis and find out that the correct number is 908…

Thanks to @thesamesam for finding the spec. My search-engine-fu would only come up with completely useless guides to newbies. Even after adding the f-word.

    The spec's at wiki.debian.org/DebianReposito.

  28. CW: Gentoo, FLOSS, LLMs, depressing

#Gentoo is still one of the bright outposts in #FLOSS where human work is valued and #LLM contributions are banned. However, sometimes I feel that this matters very little.

After all, Gentoo is a distribution. While it has its own value, it cannot exist without all the software it is shipping. It makes no sense in isolation.

And let's be honest, I don't think you can avoid slop today. We are trying our best to sieve out the worst: the copywashing chardet, the vibecoded NIH Perl crypto packages… but it's just that.

As someone who bumps Python packages, let me tell you this: LLMs are omnipresent. I notice Claude in commit logs, I notice the blasphemy of agent instructions all over the place… and there's probably much more than I don't notice. With many core components giving in, you can't avoid it without literally freezing on old, vulnerable versions, or spending hours looking for alternatives or creating them.

FLOSS is dead. People don't care. They don't have conscience. All they care about is the sick idea of "productivity", i.e. generating more slop.

The few of us who do care can do very little. We will continue doing our best until they kill us (as they're literally slowly killing the whole humankind). But that's it. Maybe it will pass once the bubble pops, maybe it won't. Either way, the damage is beyond repair. We will never be able to trust one another like we did. We will never again be a community building a better world.

It's just like everything nowadays. It's hard to find a good washing machine (one that will actually be repairable), good shoes (that won't fall apart shortly after the warranty expires), good food. You need lots of money, and even then you have to sieve through all the scammers who just sell the same shit with higher profit margin. #OpenSource is just another branch of business where people are trying to "sell" you shit, and don't care anymore if it explodes in your face. They don't even care if they're actually making a profit.
