Honestly, I've decided to accept the fact that I am a news junkie. I also recognize withdrawals when I see them.
The Struggle is Real.
And yes... I know that y'all are sick of hearing about it.

❓ Want to know what it can be like and what all you can learn when joining a big scientific conference even without being a scientist yourself? If your answer is "Yes", then check out the blog post linked below, written by our team member Bärbel Winkler while attending this year's General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) held in Vienna and online from May 4 to 8.
Oral sessions Bärbel attended focused on ...
➡️ best practices for science communication and outreach
➡️ how non-specialist audiences can learn about scientific topis
➡️ how students in different age groups can be introduced to science
➡️ the ethical, social, and cultural responsibilities geoscientists hold beyond pure researchShort courses provided input about ..
➡️ the intersection of science and public policy
➡️ what science diplomacy is about
➡️ how to create an engaging short presentation
➡️ how misinformation can be countered and science defended➡️ A Union Symposium focused on how human responses to climate change are shaped not only by scientific evidence but also by moral values, psychological dynamics, cultural identities, and religious beliefs.
➡️ A Great Debate about Geoengineering raised the question whether these concepts are actually a distraction from the urgent need for climate adaptation and mitigation. Some significant ethical fears were raised, particularly that large-scale testing might occur on Indigenous or disenfranchised lands without consent.
The whole week provided a lot of "food for thought" and the blog post shows that!

youtu.be/vB7VSdQgHoU Dammit, he keeps pointing out limits of my knowledge and understanding of eastern philosophy that I wrote in my book "The #Skeptical #Buddha , the #Tao of #Science . If he puts out more of these videos I am going to HAVE to produce a second edition. I'm not wrong, but I'm massively over simplifying and generalizing. Not like many people have actually read it so I could go for another decade without updating it and no one would be impacted.

For nearly two decades Skeptical Science has been publishing rebuttals to #ClimateMyths, always following best understanding of how to honestly and most effectively communicate facts in an environment crowded with confusing misinformation.
Undoing harm caused to a human intellect isn't easy. Is Skeptical Science doing any good with this effort?
Having concluded a multi-year experiment with the cooperation of our readers, now we have some information on "how are we doing?". By formal assessment it appears we're not wasting our time.
You can see our results in our freshly published paper. Visit the link to read all about it.
Full disclosure: we're also asking for help with our publication fee (European Geosciences Union journals are 100% open-access but that does not mean they magically have no operational expenses).

"Climate skeptics" are a thing of the past?
No. That's why we're here.
Bogus #ClimateSkepticism comes in various flavors. Many so-called skeptics are indeed cranks but others come in the passive form, their basis of doubt or disbelief mired in innocent ignorance.
Innocent ignorance can be fostered, cultivated-- and that's exactly what's happened over the course of decades in connection with #ScientificConsensus on #ClimateChange.

#ScientificConsensus with Dr John Cook
Misconceptions about consensus in science abound (and are sometimes encouraged). It it a popularity contest? Mindless conformity? If not those, what? To answer these and many other questions, Melanie Trecek-King - who runs the "Thinking is Power" website - talked with John Cook about the scientific consensus in general and about his study finding 97% consensus about human-cased climate change in particular.

When happening upon a neat article, explaining what a #ScientificConsensus is, we realized, that - even though we have a lot of material about the #consensus - we were lacking an explainer about what a scientific consensus actually is. We have now remedied this and created a page with an explainer and an accompanying glossary entry which will point our readers towards that page with a small pop-up-box.
