May 23, 1983, 43 years ago today: My first climb in the Bald Mountains, the state line range just northeast of the Smokies, was long and steep. Nevertheless, the bright, crisp morning was like rocket fuel to two sunshine-starved backpackers fresh from the sensory-deprivation tanks.

  15. A hard fall on a steep descent cut short my plans for a six-week hike after one great week. This will put off my sequel AT hike until 2027, but there will be new hikes next year.

I have already eaten chocolate chip cookies, along with a coke and a pint of chocolate ice cream. There’s a strange, new light in my eyes tonight.

It has just started to rain again.

Fittingly, as I was returning from the store, the overcast vanished for the first time in days. It was all blue sky with a few high, thin clouds from horizon to horizon. Perhaps, now that we had conquered the Smokies, everything would be all right. At any rate, I am in much better shape now than at 5:30, and light years ahead of yesterday.

Dave returned to the shelter at 6:00 with news that the store would be open until 8:00 tonight. As exhausted as I was, that just sounded too good to pass up. They did not have an extensive selection of goods, but the pint of chocolate ice cream and the coke I bought as a treat for the long walk back to the shelter sure turned my world around. While there, I also picked up some instant oatmeal and a bunch of munchies for the two days to Hot Springs.

May 22, 1983, 43 years ago today: I arrived at Davenport Gap Shelter at 4:00, having covered the final seven miles in two-and-a-half hours. I was less than a mile from the end of the Great Smoky Mountains. I had enough food for a light dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow, and then it would all be gone.

I started out wearing shorts, shirt and rain jacket. I would have probably been more comfortable had I also worn my rain pants, but they would have slowed me down considerably. Today, I needed speed.
