For the first time ever in my life, I’ve just voted at a UK polling station on a Saturday!
This is part of a trial in some areas to see what happens if you allow voting on the weekend before an election.
In my particular case, this is a local election for a Borough Council, which is going to be abolished and replaced with a unitary authority next year.
In any case, I hope the trial is successful and allows for more innovations to make it easier for people to vote.

I've published a new ACGT genomics blog post! This is a very rare event for me these days (having been out of the field for over a decade now).
A chance conversation this week led me to write almost 2,000 words last night about how — over two decades ago — I had to design a new form of gene identifier for the WormBase database (now part of @AllianceGenome) that would have to stand the test of time.
Here is a very deep dive into the decisions behind coming up with a bioinformatics gene identifier.

Just finished my first run in week five of #CouchTo5K.
This is going to be a tough week as it culminates in a 20 minute run without any breaks!

Finally found some time to visit the London Centre today to look at the detailed cityscape models that highlight new London architecture.
Thanks to @Giselle for the suggestion!

I'm happy to reveal that I have finally managed to get a new internship scheme launched at my College! I want a Digital Communications Intern to join my team at The Royal College of Psychiatrists for a 3-month internship.
This would ideally suit a UK-based PhD student who is taking part in the PIPS scheme. Sadly, we cannot pay for this internship so it would need to be funded via an academic programme.
This internship offers the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience working on live digital projects within a professional communications team. You’ll build your understanding of digital strategy, content development, and analytics, while developing transferable skills in research, communication, and collaboration.
As a former PhD student who went on to a research career, I'd also hope that I could be a good mentor, especially regarding any discussion around transitions to a post-research career.
Find out more here in link below. Please share with anyone you think might be interested.

Minor milestone accomplished! I’ve just completed week three of #CouchTo5K. I used to run 5K quite regularly and did a weekly Park Run when I lived in London.
The combination or my advancing age, an extra child, and other commitments have all meant that my running habits have disappeared.
Although I religiously walk 10K steps every day, I’ve wanted to try to get back into running.
Getting three weeks under my belt now makes me feel like I’m finally starting to make it a regular habit… which I guess is the most essential aspect of it! 🏃♂️

#Shard reflection that I took this morning from More London near London Bridge station where they have large concrete blocks with gently flowing water on the surface.

Spent almost five hours at #BletchleyPark yesterday. So many amazing things to see and learn about regarding World War II, the role of codebreaking, and the development of early computers.
Would have stayed for longer but our kids were getting a bit overwhelmed by that point.
Highly recommended.

I figured, correctly, that you need to get here early to get a place in the gallery where you have a good view of the screen. #RoyalAlbertHall

We are in the cheap seats…which is to say no seats at all, we’re standing in the upper gallery. But what a view of this beautiful building!
