Riding one of Kauai's new electric busses for the first time, paid for by the Inflation Reduction Act. Thanks, Biden. $2 ride to the airport. ⚡
It's got that new bus smell. Bonus photo of a bird of paradise at the bus stop.

Foundation for the National Institutes of Health establishes a new alumni network for former NIH employees. I'm guessing the need for this is higher now than ever...I know a bunch of people who have recently lost their formerly stable NIH jobs and are looking for work.

My state added a $50 annual road fee for EVs. Which is fine, I don't mind paying it, but the obvious solution in Hawaii is to repeal the state gas tax and implement a miles driven*weight fee for every vehicle. The state already requires annual inspections, so just note the mileage. Easy.

I didn't take a photo of the hundreds of spent gecko eggs that fell out of a light fixture I just replaced (third time this has happened) but imagine a pearl-colored ovoid about the shape and size of a jelly belly. Bigger than I would've expected.

A recent high-profile case of a visitor throwing a rock at an endangered Hawaiian monk seal highlights how few cases of harassing & killing these animals get prosecuted.
It's a bit of a sensitive topic but local fishermen here hold onto false beliefs that the seals are not endemic to Hawaii and that they steal their catch.
My buddy who works on monk seal protection at NOAA said they've given up trying to educate adults & instead focus on kids.

Sometimes I browse #science feeds on bluesky and wish more of those accounts used fedi bridging. I'd like to follow them. I don't have an account there so can't directly encourage anyone to do so.

Every month when I get my power bill I'm thankful the previous owner of this house installed a rooftop photovoltaic system. Last month was finally sunny after many cloudy months and the panels were zipping. Electricity is 40 cents per kWh here so every free watt is a gift. My system is fairly small and has needed maintenance and repairs but it's saving me at least $100 a month.

Youngsters running this taco truck listening to all the light country hits from the early 80s like...Islands in the Stream and I'm Driving My Life Away...these are true connoisseurs of the genre.

Got a two-factor code from Microscroft at 4am so I guess somebody tried to access my account, where they will find NOTHING. No subscriptions, no payment methods, no emails...sorry chump.

I miss being alcohol tolerant. I've been sick 14 years and occasionally I still have a beer or a glass of wine and then...instant hangover. Yeah, learning is hard.
It's a fun feature of post-viral illnesses like ME/CFS and long covid.

Steve Cohen was the only Democratic congressperson from Tennessee...now he's retiring due to SCOTUS-endorsed gerrymandering.
I met him once...great guy who spent a lot of time and effort on cannabis rescheduling and ending the federal drug war.

I do acknowledge that the Game of Thrones TV writers have ruined the lives of millions and it's a huge tragedy.

I watch TV shows that entertain me and then sometimes the show isn't as entertaining anymore and my life just goes on and I look for something late to watch without wanting to murder the show writers. Crazy, I know.

So I can request a wheelchair when I make a reservation but I still have to pay the bag fee...or I guess I can ask the underpaid wheelchair pusher to also push my bag, which kind of feels like a dick move.
