  5. There’s often a strong spiritual element among the South African artists I’m drawn to these days. I’m not doing it on purpose I promise.

    I just persused Keenan Meyer’s instagram feed and I found pictures of him wearing amabhayi, which are fabrics mostly worn by Southern African traditional healers. It doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a healer, but a sign that he’s spiritually gifted in some way (one doesn't just wear those fabrics for fun). Suddenly the music makes even more sense.

    I haven’t mentioned this but Nduduzo Makhathini is an initiated healer too and if you’re spiritually enclined I invite you to read his blog. He hasn’t posted in a while but it’s there and it’s absolutely fascinating:

    Meanwhile Tumi Mogorosi and Zim Ngqawana’s sounds are imbued with spirit. There are others of course but I’m gripped by these ones lately.
