Shopping King Louie (Louis / Shopaholic Louis)
(2016 - Viki, 16 1:00 eps)It's a full-of-tropes romcom - a rich chaebol with amnesia falling for a poor, country girl (100 Days My Prince story with same FL), but is so cute that it's hard not to love it. It avoids being too melodramatic. The story is pretty predictable with some tiny surprises. The OST is very fun - a lot of western oldies.
Seo In Guk being silly is so darling! I've only seen him in serious things before, but he is great at being a puppy in love. Nam Ji Hyun plays a strong, determined woman very well. The leads have great chemistry & the side characters have sweet little stories of their own. My favorite grandma, Kim Young Ok makes a great conglomorate Chairperson.
A very fun, relaxing watch!

My Mister
(2018 - Viki, 16 1:17 eps)Watched in memory of Lee Sun Kyun. One of the best dramas I've watched. Acting, costuming, directing, lighting, effects, & music all contribute to a beautifully executed story.
Slice of life drama about 3 middle-aged brothers' relationships, showing the depression that hits when you realize that everything you thought you wanted means nothing.
Slow-pacing, sparse dialogue, & drab colors reflecting emotions change as feelings are explored. The effects for flashbacks & intoxication are inspired. Symbolism abounds - an empty hand to make you sob.
There is a touching relationship with grandma that rips at your heart. You learn what hopelessness vs. 1 small ray of hope does to change a life.
Not a light watch, but even with its darker side, it's very comforting. The talent of Lee Sun Kyun is a great loss.

Secret Royal Inspector & Joy
(2021 - Viki, 16 1:00 eps)A Joseon Secret Royal Inspector who would rather open a restaurant meets a fiercely independent woman & they team up to solve a political intrigue murder mystery. It has many similarities with "The Matchmaker." But it's much lighter - not as many characters to know & the mystery is not as complicated.
There's not anything particularly remarkable. The script is somewhat female centric, with strong, intelligent women. There are some funny moments & a few references to old westerns. The performances were good. The side characters are acted well and contribute nicely with their own small story lines. The villains are great.
If you want a light, bingeable, fun, Joseon mystery-romance, this works. But be warned, switching from slapstick comedy to dark murdering & back again happen quickly, so brace yourself.

It has a 6.7 rating on MDL, so I had been putting off watching, even though I enjoy Seo Kang Joon's acting. After I saw Esom in another drama, I thought I'd try.Around eps. 4 I was going to drop it, which I rarely do. I hated the main characters. But I kept going: 1) I had seen the leads' work before & couldn't believe they would have accepted parts like this. I was right. The characters improve so much. 2) Part of this drama is set in Portugal. I am visiting in a few months & I wanted to see it through a kDrama lens. Totally worth it - so beautiful!
The FL has a lot of tragic things happen in her life, one of which hit close to home for me & caused a lot of crying - therapeutic.

Best friends live on different floors of the same house & have supported each other through the good & the bad but have remained platonic. Things start to shift just as the FL is put in charge of a dating reality show & calls upon her friend to be a cast member.
Still might be worth a watch for one of the reality show couples. The development of their relationship was so sweet. The 2nd FL's story needed more screen time & more info about her life - she was great. I also enjoyed the lesson at the end about how life is not one happy ending. It's a series of endings, some happy, some not, but we learn & grow from them all.

I had watched originally for my Park Hyung Sik & Park Seo Joon quests. Now I see so many familiar faces. The acting is top-notch.
For BTS fans, this was V's acting debut & he won an award for Best Idol Actor that year.
I paid much more attention to the music (which I loved before, but now I see the contribution to the story & love that 3 of the actors sang tracks).
Now that I've seen several historicals, I appreciate the costuming here - the details are gorgeous.
Not to mention over the top swashbuckling fighting in silk robes, sweet moments, funny, seasoned actors, & shower scenes.
I think this will continue to be a holiday tradition.

I paid much more attention to the music (which I loved before, but now I see the contribution to the story & love that 3 of the actors sang tracks).
Now that I've seen several historicals, I appreciate the costuming here - the details are gorgeous.
Not to mention over the top swashbuckling fighting in silk robes, sweet moments, funny, seasoned actors, & shower scenes.
I think this will continue to be a holiday tradition.

(2016 - Viki, 20 1:00 eps)For a holiday treat, I rewatched Hwarang (1st watched in March '23 - just 6 months into my kDrama hobby).
I'll put the summary here & my thoughts in a comment because I ran into a character limit.
It's a story of political intrigue. The Queen Mother sends the crown prince into hiding for his safety. He never develops the relationships he needs to take power & doesn't have confidence in his ruling abilities. Through a new group of young warriors (the Hwarang), the future king discovers himself & his abilities. There is a lot of comedy, but the political story takes over the last 3 - 4 episodes. There's bromance & romance. Watching the friendships develop between the Hwarang is one of my favorite things.
