  1. Bong Joon-ho – „Parasite“ (2019)

Also mir jedenfalls. Als Lebenslieblingsfilm. (ARTE, Wh.)

„Wenn man keinen Plan hat, dann kann auch nichts schiefgehen. Das heißt, du hast keine Vorstellung davon wie es sein müsste, also macht es nichts, wenn es anders wird. Auch wenn du jemanden umbringst oder dein Land verrätst. Am Ende ist das scheißegal.“ (Park Dong-ik) (ARD, Wh.)

Let me know if you want to schedule some watchparties for #CoffeePrince! I watched it when #LeeSunKyun was still alive, and his character was a favourite for me!

Same! And I've joined a weekly language exchange group near me that has quite a few Korean speakers who attend regularly. So, I get to bounce my perceptions back and forth. One guy last night figured that I had a better idea than he did of when Chuseok is coming!
Several have chatted a lot about the former presidency and how it ended.
At this point, I'm finding that workplace dramas are kind of my favourite. Diary of a Prosecutor was a good one, starring the fabulous #LeeSunKyun RIP. Prosecutors get moved all around the country to try to reduce corruption.

The show is SUCH a marvel, although many folks find it too dark. For me, it's a tremendously hopeful show about the power of perseverance.

#Day22 A 2024 Drama that deserves the hype
    A 2018 drama that I watched in 2024 and gave a 10 to was #MyMister.
We watched in honour of #LeeSunKyun following his death by suicide. His acting, and that of #IU were stunning, as was the story, the direction, the cinematography, and the OST.
It's a bleak story and show for the most part but illustrates magnificently the power of having a single person who believes in you.

    Sleep
    (2023 - Netflix movie 1:34)

An interesting idea with great actors. The husband suddenly starts doing scary things during his sleep. After trying everything, the couple turns to a shaman to help.

As a horror film, it has an unexpected twist and does its job of making you uncomfortable, & providing thrills & suspense. But the behavior of several people would not be considered normal & there's not enough time to justify or explain. Unfortunately, the lackluster writing kept it from realizing its potential, but if you like horror, it's worth a watch for the acting.

  20. CW: re: Spoiler Misaeng Incomplete Life

NGL, it takes a LOT of emotional energy to watch, at times! I watched it as a tribute to #LeeSunKyun and that really intensified the poignance.

Oh, I hear you! I really appreciated #LeeSunKyun in #CoffeePrince. After his murder, I watched #MyMister and felt like I really got to know him intimately as he portrayed his character SO eloquently, almost entirely through his facial expressions and posture.
I'm so distressed for his widow, #JeonHyeJin, also a gifted factor, and their young sons, exiled to the US.

Yeah, ML in his original form is not that special but through the magic of #CharacterDevelopment, he evolves as do several others. I especially love #LeeSunKyun in #CoffeePrince, also, the café dudes!

This movie was the first Korean production I ever watched after it won so many awards. I need to rewatch, as I review a lot of the work by the amazing #LeeSunKyun.
He was murdered by the court of public opinion and brutal penalties for his many high-budget productions that dropped him as soon as the whiff of a scandal erupted. SUCH a talented actor! I feel so much for his equally talented wife, #JeonHyeJin, and their 2 young sons.

    My Mister
    (2018 - Viki, 16 1:17 eps)

Watched in memory of Lee Sun Kyun. One of the best dramas I've watched. Acting, costuming, directing, lighting, effects, & music all contribute to a beautifully executed story.

Slice of life drama about 3 middle-aged brothers' relationships, showing the depression that hits when you realize that everything you thought you wanted means nothing.

Slow-pacing, sparse dialogue, & drab colors reflecting emotions change as feelings are explored. The effects for flashbacks & intoxication are inspired. Symbolism abounds - an empty hand to make you sob.

There is a touching relationship with grandma that rips at your heart. You learn what hopelessness vs. 1 small ray of hope does to change a life.

Not a light watch, but even with its darker side, it's very comforting. The talent of Lee Sun Kyun is a great loss.

  34. @EllenInEdmonton The romance is not the main feature of this webtoon-based #kdrama, it's more about how to make the romance work in that particular context.
The idols and the actors worlds are all entangled in SK. Most actors have been trained as idols first and switched to acting afterwards. Even modeling comes from the same casting system.

#Imitation shows every aspect about this business. And with a still fresh open wound from #LeeSunKyun 's horrible death, it can be painful to watch.

  35. CW: Discussion of suicide

"On Tuesday, a new organization called the Association of Solidarity Among Cultural Artists released a statement announcing its formation and urging the Korean media and local authorities to work together to prevent tragedies like Lee’s case from happening again."

Bong Joon-ho, who worked with Lee in the Cannes and Oscar-winning "#Parasite," was joined at the press conference by singer-songwriter Yoon Jong-shin, actor Kim Eui-seong, director Lee Won-tae, actor Choi Deok-moon and Choi Jeong-hwa
    ...

Bong said in a faltering voice, "A single sentence that the police have announced -- ‘We have conducted the process in a legitimate manner' -- doesn't mean that they're free from responsibility."
