    Please Don't Date Him
    (2020 - Viki, 10 1:00 eps)

A surprising but too short gem of a romCOM. There are plays on words, silly physical comedy & have you seen the- FL-needs-to-wear-ML's-clothing-for-some-reason trope turned upside down before? A great scene of a photo shoot for the "hot" firefighters calendar. A fun watch for all that, but layered enough to ponder.

FL, an anti-hacker, develops an AI fridge that gets a chip that can check on her friends' dates, but not her guy. We get a little mystery about the off-the-grid ML.

A lovely womance - which I wanted more of & the ML doesn't do all the rescuing. Questions about social media, AI, trusting our instincts, is using private data, even with good intentions, justified? It also looks at misogyny in relationships & the workplace. It was a nice production with great acting!

    Live Your Own Life (2023)
    (2023 - Viki, 51 1:05 eps)

The 2nd weekender (50+ eps) I've watched. 1st was 2014's "What Happens to My Family?" Both feel they were filmed in 2014. Premise is good - you shouldn't live entirely for others, but the writing was lacking.

The leads carry the show. When people are in dire situations, there is a LOT of whining & little action to resolve it. I did Fforward to get through the elders' tantrums & sulking. What these parents expect from their adult children is beyond understanding & although there is some growth it comes far too slowly.

I did keep watching because it was a little makjang & had some great twists - the last 20 episodes are when things finally start to happen & the show gets interesting instead of infuriating. I was pleased with how the story wrapped up, but the message about living for yourself was somewhat muddied.

  11. I first noticed Ha Joon (Song Ha Joon) in "Destined With You" where I thought he did a great job with the character.

Recently, he's accidentally popped up in everything I'm watching, starting with "Crazy Love," which I finished a few weeks ago. Then I started "Bad Prosecutor," where he is a power-hungry prosecutor playing the foil for Doh Kyung Soo's character. Then I watched "Live Your Own Life," where he finally gets the leading man role & is perfect for it (script could have been better, but he did great with what he had).

Next was "Please Don't Date Him." It's not credited, but I swear he's the voice of the refrigerator. I recently started 2018's "Radio Romance," where he again plays a character where we don't know if he's good or evil. That type of character seems to be his niche role. Maybe because he can be so sweet, but also so convincingly evil?

    The Impossible Heir
    (2024 - Disney+/Hulu, 12 1:01 eps)

Not a well-loved show by ratings. I paused for a while because I heard the end wasn't as hoped. Many people did not like the plot - a lot of corporate behind-the-scenes shenanigans propel the story & many thought the FL flat & cold. Women often get criticized for playing cold characters. Her character was supposed to be cold - it's even mentioned explicitly.

A great plot twist changes everything. Looking back, we see the true nature of the characters. Lee Jae Wook's character does a lot of thinking & he's great at conveying his thoughts silently.

The ending was open & I will interpret it to match my expectations. If you like a good production, corporate intrigue, little romance, open endings, & the actors in this series, it might be a good binge - keeping track of the twisty plot over time is tough.

    The Atypical Family
    (2024 - Netflix, 12 1:10 eps)

An original, well-written, well-acted, compelling story with meaning makes this one of the best of 2024 (& that's a high bar). A family of superheroes has fallen due to modern afflictions. A woman appears in their lives & despite an awful start, becomes a ray of hope.

The father-daughter relationship is so moving. Park So Yi at 12 was amazing. The side stories all fold beautifully into the themes of greed-destroys-all & your-perception-can-change-fate that run through the drama. The use of cinematography as a story-telling element was on-point & gorgeous. Chemistry was stellar in all relationships.

I want to go on & on, but I don't think I can say more without spoilers. Excellent drama!

    May I Help You
    (2022 - Prime, 16 1:10 eps)

A funeral director who talks to the recently deceased repeatedly encounters a man & they help each other overcome their problems as they slowly realize their intertwined fate.

There's an overarching mystery to solve, but each episode is about the FL's latest client. The grief & pain of loss are nicely written. The pacing seems a bit slow, & the side stories were uneven. Some felt undeveloped & some seemed to be filler, not for plot advancement.

Acting was good with unexpectedly touching stories. Uncles were funny & sweet, with a cute bromance. The leads had good chemistry, but the romance felt underdeveloped. Choice of villain was unexpected, but it didn't fit. Important info shows up in the last episode. If we had known earlier, some of the stories might have had even more meaning. I did enjoy it, but it didn't realize its potential.
