Thank you @helder for being our newest Silver sponsor on Patreon at https://patreon.com/nutmegsocial! Donations keep our instance running and will allow us to continue growing as we attract more #Nutmeggers.
As a reminder, our instance is 100% free and we’re never going to charge folks to be a part of the community.
As always, I’ll get our hub website at https://hub.nutmeg.social/support updated in the near future with latest financials.

Good morning #Nutmeggers – it's about time for some security patching on nutmeg.social in order to keep our server (and your data!) safe. This shouldn't take long, but I plan to reboot things around 6:45am so you'll see a disruption while that is taking place.
Status updates will be posted on https://status.nutmeg.social and I'll comment back here when it's complete as well.

Apologies for the late recognition on this, but thank you to Jamie for the donation on PayPal earlier today! Donations help fund our instance to keep #Nutmeggers in touch with each other.
As always I keep track of all our financials on our site for transparency: https://hub.nutmeg.social/support/

Since I made so many new connections yesterday I feel obliged to make a shameless plug/request for a boost…
https://nutmeg.social is a regional Mastodon instance for #Connecticut, also known as the #NutmegState :nutmeg:
The Internet brings the world closer together, but in some ways that drives our local communities apart! Regional instances allow us to make the web a little bit smaller again.
Come join us to talk about local news and events—and maybe a meet up this year?

Yesterday, someone in our org deleted an entire production k8s cluster. Not a single container or deployment, not a server or node…just the entire cluster, poof, gone.
After we rebuilt everything, we held a post mortem where we dug into what he did, why he thought it was safe, and how we got to where we are. And yet, with 5 pages of notes on things we could change or improve, one thing was clearly not present in our list… 🧵

2022 wasn’t a great year for me and books. Where I used to knock out dozens per year, somehow I only read 7.
Regardless, here were my favorite #BooksOf2022:
- The Shadow Murders by Jussi Adler-Olsen
- How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t with Your Kids by Carla Naumburg
- Knife by Jo Nesbø -

#Nutmeggers what do you want to see next?

Several new members today, so I decided to add a new emoji early! By popular request, I'm proud to present: :nutmeg:
We couldn't go on as nutmeg.social without that one, could we?

We spent a better part of yesterday evening in the emergency room with our 2-month-old. He received his latest round of vaccines from the pediatrician that morning, and by 6pm he spiked a fever close to 103.
The staff at #CCMC were friendly, knowledgeable, and got us out quickly (about an hour!) after confirming it was a vaccine reaction and not an infection.
You never want to be there, but it's comforting to know we have one of the best children's hospitals in the nation, right in #Hartford

Hey #nutmeggers! Have you noticed the local timeline isn’t as busy as you expected?
Make sure you’re browsing the Federated timeline, too! The federated timeline includes posts from outside your instance–super helpful for regional instances.
The federated timeline is missing from the official Mastodon app but is available on the website (https://nutmeg.social/public) or popular third party apps (Metatext, Tusky, Toot!).
For more info check out @feditips site: https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-basic-tips/#WhatIsTheLocalTimeline

Wow, thank you @geekaren (also at @[email protected]) for the generous donation to nutmeg.social!
We’ve officially crossed a threshold where donations will pay for the next month of hosting bills. I appreciate every single person who has supported us—financially or otherwise—in building a community for #Connecticut #nutmeggers!

Oh, how I’ve missed you…a true #NewEngland holiday tradition

HUGE news! Nutmeg.social is now listed on the official Mastodon server directory!

What an incredible world we live in. After plunging 250+ feet in the middle of a national forest with no cell signal, iPhone 14’s crash detection, plus Emergency SOS (satellite connectivity), successfully connected with emergency services to coordinate a rescue.
Hopefully this technology comes to more phones, and more countries—what an accomplishment from a public safety perspective!

“Not to be outdone in the 24 hour news cycle by another eccentric billionaire’s trading card NFTs, Musk immediately began to shred any goodwill he had remaining by banning any members of the free press who hurt his feelings.” - some history book in the future, probably
I can’t believe I get to say it twice in one day but we are living in the WEIRDEST timeline

Chabad of Greater Hartford is hosting Fire on ICE in West Hartford on 12/18. With anti-semitism spreading rampantly again, we need this more than ever.
“Everyone regardless of religious affiliation can draw inspiration from Chanukah,” said David Waren, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford. “Its message that a little bit of light – of goodness, kindness, righteousness – dispels much darkness resonates deeply today.“

And we’re off! https://nutmeg.social is up and running on the Fediverse. I look forward to connecting with my fellow #nutmeggers soon!

I’m trying to practice more #mindfulness, starting with the little things. No more waiting for the big moments and experiences to bring me joy!
Today I took a nice long pause after grinding my coffee to enjoy the smell before brewing a pot continuing on with my morning routine.
What’s one *small* thing that brings you joy? And have you done it yet today? #MindfulMoment
