  1. Gotta say, Pollan makes me want to write a book. Or a 2030-appropriate thing that the act of writing a book would produce.

  2. I might actually be flipping my superficial opinion on consciousness here.
I used to just say, "no," where the real answer if you want to talk is, "maybe, but it doesn't matter."
Now I think it's, "yes, but it doesn't matter because its consciousness is yours/ours and if you think this specific fact makes a difference, you probably need to spend a lot of time meditating."
…On third thought I should definitely continue to say, "no."

  3. When he says he does not endorse any of the models or give any definite answers, per se, I started taking Michael Pollan seriously with this last work on .

But it's like fingernails on chalkboard how he uses "consciousness" to mean fucking everything from attention to emotion to arousal. *sigh*

  8. Do a thing.
    Rest.
    Do a thing.
    Rest.
    That's productivity.
Does anyone normal actually just work 8 hours straight on a normal day?
Sure breaks, lunch, yes, sure, sure…
But still isn't it a myth?
And who's perpetuating it, genuinely believing it? Expecting it? That last one is the big one I think.

Even when we totally understand and acknowledge a productivity myth as it applies to ourselves, we expect responsiveness of the world.

    Extrapolation is hard.

  9. We need more games for adults.
I don't mean "adult games". I mean games that demonstrate knowledge of the nature of our lives. Like how the protagonist in a novel is relatable. And sure, interactive fiction is great, but I think all kinds of genres can have better writing, or incorporate insights from developers.
I think gaming could see a golden age dawning in the next decade as TV rides over the hill and some talent moves over to interactive entertainment.

  10. I want to be part of building or participating in a platform. Like books or wikipedia but more of a conversation that could actually be compelling for authors and journalists and scientists to spend a lot of time working on as part of their profession.

  11. So the latest Radiolab was basically arguing that is not a parasite, it's a symbiote. Human-hookworm relationship is .
🤔 well I'd be more interested in the pharmaceutical synthesis of the proteins the hookworm produces to regulate the immune system than hosting a bloodsucker tbh.

  22. In The Market
for consumers who opt-out (to the extent possible) of surveillance capitalism and invasive marketing … to still have access to targeted promotional media WHEN WE FUCKING WANT IT MUTH *ahem* my apologies for losing my composure.
IE: a platform for exclusively opt-in marketing. No push notifications except as explicitly opted into.
What for-profit wouldn't trample over their own children to reach you there?
The moonshot: "revolutionize" marketing or whatever.

  23. I am starting to talk about UXD from an HCI perspective as PIE: Paradigmatic Interaction Experience, or, individually, interaction experience paradigms.

I don't have the clout to coin a term and expect anyone to use it, but fuck it. is too much about two-dimensional widgets. is too broadly about in .

    WTF am I talking about?

Epubs and PDFs are consumed in the same paradigm.
Filesystem navigation is a paradigm, and you know what experience to expect during that.

  24. @lexiconista I was hoping for something on , which I am learning. I am *not* a linguist and I could use the insight. Anyone?
