Amazon Prime > host giveaway events, thrift, shop at fam owned
Diff browsers > Waterfox
G Maps > OrganicMaps
Gmail > Proton
Google Cloud > Local harddrive

I deleted a lot of digital stuff, files etc. Installing the Material file manager on my Xiaomi/Android phone was a BIG upgrade there.

Tried to get Fdroid or Aurora, but they don't show in my Google Play..?

So on today's #MastodonMonday to-do list:

1. Start planning the #disenshittification move to self hosting and further reduction in US-based tech.

2. Move what little I have invested / in my pension to non-US funds.

I'm no longer prepared to support a rogue nation state that is fundamentally determined to fuck with the world order regardless of the cost.

Bonus points for sitting on something painful while doing this to externalise the right royal pain in the arse that this has become.

@maxschrems We could counter with an equally stupid tariff... or we could do the smarter thing and abolish the anti-circumvention laws that we originally passed against our interests just because the US threatened tariffs otherwise. Now that we get tariffs there is no reason to stay captured by US tech companies. We could have right to repair laws and the right to write, distribute and buy software for the products we buy. There is no reason that John Deere can brick all of Europe's tractors at the same time (or Tesla all Teslas, Apple all iPhones, Microsoft all office suites etc) other than that we agreed to stupid deals in the past to avoid tariffs, which we get now anyway.

Last year, I started migrating everything off #gmail.
Not much goes there now, but I’m finally tidying up 20+ years of historical messages.
I started with about 21k mails, now down to under 5k, which I’ll shortly transfer to my new addresses and delete from gmail.

I’ve been on gmail since you needed an invitation to open an account, but it’s time to fully leave.

@alexandrageese Europe's strongest weapon is to cancel trade deals that were once brokered in exchange for anti-circumvention laws. Make it legal to liberate phones and repair stuff and US tech monopolies break.

However, a baseline likely exists beyond which #disenshittification becomes actual value-generating improvement.

That is, disenshittification only describes the process of recovering what was lost in terms of utility from a customer perspective.

It would appear that the modern investor prefers to prioritise investments with the end goal of converting existing users into a vendor-locked, captive audience via hostage-taking tactics, which then enables rent-extraction.

I’m a bit inspired by Mondragon coops like Arizmendi…

Operation #Disenshittification took another step forward yesterday: I replaced my #Arlo video doorbell with a #Reolink, connected to my #Synology DiskStation.

Arlo has increasingly become enshittified as they’ve become increasingly aggressive in pushing customers to over to their cloud based subscription model. It’s a shame, because I’ve got close to $1000 invested in their hardware, but I’m sick of the nag-screens and shrinking functionality.
