  1. As said before - the lens I mostly used this trip was one where the autofocus wasn't working. This resulted in a lot of images, all of which are ever so slighly out-of-focus, because I don't really have a way to perfectly focus anything without a tripod, a split prism or, indeed, autofocus.
At least it's not too visible if you don't enlarge it too much, and I did get some practice framing stuff, so: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  2. Time to dust off this account! I've been carrying the old Panasonic Lumix on our outdoor activities for years just in case we saw an interesting bird worth documenting, but with multiple huskies along for the treks, it's seen very little use.

Until today! We're back up in northern Minnesota and today we did the hike to Magnetic Rock and back. Zeena alerted to a bird in a tree over the trail, and it turned out to be a Spruce Grouse!

We scare up plenty of Ruffed Grouse on our outings, but Spruce Grouse are rare for us, and this one just sat there, unperturbed, as we walked underneath.

It was "cooperative" in that it didn't move, but it certainly could have been more helpful by moving to a location with fewer branches in the way! These pics are the best I could get, fighting the autofocus all the way.

  3. Seen Hummingbird hawk-moths a few times over the years here in south eastern Germany. Yesterday I‘ve managed to snap photos of one at my in-laws garden.

Takeaway: my 20+ year old macro lens w/ it‘s 30y old design is good enough for immobile or slow objects, but too slow for most living creatures. I should probably upgrade. It‘s autofocus is already under-powered for slower insects, but mostly useless for faster moving insects, reptiles etc.

  8. Four shots of the moon tonight in the first quarter phase at 59% luminosity tonight.

First two frames show Mare Tranquillitatis, centre showing blue/purple, Mare Serenitatis to the north of it.

Third frame centres on Mare Serenitatis. The two craters at 1 o'clock are Aristoteles & Eudoxus. The two shadowed craters at 11 o'clock are Aristillus & Autolycus.

  12. For the first time ever, I have purchased a third party lens for one of my cameras. It is a Meike 85mm F/1.8. I’ve never had an aperture wider than F/2.0 before so get ready for lots of blurry background fun. The reviews I have read said the autofocus is a bit of a gamble, and in the few minutes I’ve been playing with it I believe it. The same reviews suggest that keeping the aperture wide open might not be the best move, but it’s going to take some time before I get over the 1.8 giddiness so we’ll have to see about that.

Here are a few pointless shots where I just prove to myself that the lens actually works. It does.

Note, everything in my living room has a yellowish tinge because all of the lights in my living room have a yellowish tinge. Just in case you were wondering. When we move to the dining room the colors look less yellow.

That last one is at F1.8 and the plant is in front of a window which is why the background is totally obliterated. That’s not a lens issue, that’s a composition issue. Also a photographer sucks at photography issue. Clearly.

So a new lens to play with! WOOHOO! Does this mean we try for a sunrise at the ocean trip tomorrow? Maybe.

Will make life just that little bit easier when I don't need to run around to press autofocus and record buttons.
