  1. One Battle After Another feels like a vibe directed version of a movie; a cheap plastic diversion that is touted by its creator and others as meaningful, but it's shallow, hollow.

The most substance and meaning it has is the racist sexual objectification and vilification of Black women, not anti-oppression, as claimed.

Its racism is wrapped in white (male) saviorism; a failed parody signifying nothing, at best.

  6. Oops!

I also watched #F1, which I enjoyed for what it is: An ad for Formula One racing and the United Arab Emirates, and nothing more.

More than the other films I rank at the bottom, F1 absolutely did not deserve a Best Picture nomination. Not because it's not well-done, technically, but because it's just an advertisement, not "cinema".

I'll grant it's excellent sound design is worthy, but Bruckheimerization is the real threat, NOT the MCU.

  11. I haven't had a streak longer than 4 days since my 23 day streak a couple of weeks ago.

Seems I'm more at risk of slipping back down to 75%, or lower, than I am likely to bump up to 77%, or higher.

    Ah, well.

  12. Of the 5 of this year's Best Picture nominees I've seen, Sinners is my favorite, with Hamnet close behind.

The other 3, in order of preference, are:
The Secret Agent, One Battle After Another, Bugonia.

The last 2 absolutely do not deserve to be considered Best Picture despite having many excellent aspects.

Overall, the last two are too inconsistent and problematic in too many ways, for me.

  13. The Secret Agent is good but too slow and the first hour and a half is just too much and needs editing.

It does a great job of immersing us into its world; it's almost cinema vérité.

Gritty, sweaty, and earthy, it's a sensory movie that makes the environment almost palpable.

Wagner Moura is excellent and is the thread that weaves the past, present, and future of the story into a tapestry of Brazil's recent history, nightmares and all.

  14. Bugonia: Not good.

Unnecessary level of misogynistic violence, an ending with an unnecessary level of silliness, and a main male character that is pure toxic masculinity and sadistically cruel.

Along with the ridiculous ending of #PoorThings (which should have stuck with the much better book ending), Yorgos may be too self-indulgent.

I love #Dogtooth, but these two fail in overall story, for me.

Still gonna try his previous work 🤞🏿

  19. And I love the way Agnes is said.

It's another example of how the U.S. tends to make everything ugly, the way we pronounce it here.

  21. After loving the start of the movie, I was feeling unmoved by the middle two thirds, outside of the death sequence.

Then the soliloquy by the Thames.

Then Agnes' understanding of the theme of the play.

    Then the outstretched hand.

    And the other..

    And the others...

I'm glad I didn't see this in the theater because I almost bawled.

As it is, I'm still in tears as I write this.

    I won't be mad if #Hamnet wins.

  22. Steven Spielberg is either an emissary or member of, or an ambassador for, an alien species.

That's a theory I've not seriously held since Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and I'm sure many others feel the same.

With Disclosure Day, he makes the silly theory less so.

I've never seen E.T., think Close Encounters is kinda bad (meh, at best), but am very interested in seeing Disclosure Day.
