  1. Gorillaz - The Mountain

Who would have thought that the "virtual cartoon band" of 25 years ago would still be releasing good albums so many years later?

There are a lot of ghosts on this particular one, not just due to the deaths of Albarn and Hewleitt's fathers, but those of many collaborators they've had over the years.

So rather than partying through world-ending disasters, here they're celebrating the final climb...

  6. Frou Frou - details

Imogen Heap joined with Guy Sigsworth in 2002 and put out their only album, which was just released on 2LP vinyl by the Interscope Vinyl Collective.

For whatever reason, people just didn't buy it back then, despite the success of Breathe In and Let Go and the overall quality of the whole thing.

The public is a fickle thing, but you don't have to be: it's great! (The pressing is a bit noisy, from GS Canada.)

  11. Following up on this...the report from Tracking Angle is correct: the long-out-of-print Mosaic version of this is, indeed, significantly better sounding, for whatever reason.

  12. Nicholas Payton - Triune

Three pretty stellar players -- Payton (keys, flugelhorn), Esperanza Spalding (bass, vocals), and Karriem Riggins (drums) -- get together to make modern, groove-centric jazz.

  18. Velocity Girl - ¡Simpatico!

Hey, they're not just in films and commercials anymore!

Well, of course, their albums came out before music supervisors started snagging choice cuts, and this, their last, was just re-released by Sub Pop, remastered and including some B-Sides.

(They'd done the same for the Albini-produced Copacetic, releasing as UltraCopacetic, remixed more to their liking a few years ago.)

Anyway, bright, noisy, harmonies, good stuff.

  19. I did like someone's comment that Catherine Wheel was a midpoint between the braininess of Radiohead (who opened for them) and the dunderheadedness of Oasis...seems about right.

Also, there's just *so much* Pink Floyd-ness on this album. I mean, in case you didn't get it, they basically reproduced the "radio" trick from Wish You Were Here on one track...and hired producer Bob Ezrin, who did The Wall...

  20. Catherine Wheel - Adam and Eve

A huge recovery from Happy Days.

Dickinson, Futter, Hawes, and Sims expand their palette further, put together a collections of great, varied tracks, assisted by producers Bob Ezrin and Garth Richards.

Despite that, the band just never took off. There'd be one very weak follow-up, Wishville, and that's all she wrote.

  22. The Roy Hargrove Quintet - earfood

Easily streamed, and found on CD, but the only place to source it on vinyl is Japan.

However you get it, this 2008 release, with his touring quintet, is a delight from first (Cedar Walton's I'm Not So Sure) to last (Sam Cooke's Bring it on Home to Me).

(Gerald Clayton, on piano, is all over modern jazz LPs, including his own, and always on point.)
