Here comes artists’ introduction No.4: Our #worklab_mur2025 will be joined by Harriet!
Harriet is a creative software engineer and organiser, part of a queer tech collective called Machine Streams in Bristol, UK. They are interested in participatory, DIY and low-tech practices. In 2023 they took part in an artist residency with Control Shift and Container Magazine, creating a DIY server poem, zine and workshops exploring the concept of websites as gardens. Over the past year they have been working with Machine Streams on a series of artist workshops on queering AI. Their most recent project with Machine Streams is a series called Queer Phone, a project exploring self-hosting VoIP networks and using telephone lines as alternative networks, which was recently exhibited at the Chaos Feminist Convention.

I felt sad that unlike a photo or a stone tablet their contents will probably be lost irretrievably without the tech needed to read them, and I think with a pang of grief of the few family photos I have of people who have died.
But then, there's something freeing about letting go of that as well - and knowing that we can never really hoard the past, however many gigabytes of data or boxes of photos we keep in the attic. -
Still ~reflecting on #AMRO26 and the last workshop I went to - Zelda Diedrich's Reclaiming Memories, in which we discussed lost USB sticks, hardrives, work deleted in fits of pique, and ways to memorialise our hardware.
I had never seen the inside of a hard drive before and loved the shininess. Something really poignant that these metal scraps might long outlast us, unreadable and mysterious.

the battery workshop was particularly apt as I'd forgotten to bring a European adapter and my phone was running out of battery rapidly.
Such a cliche but it really brought home how attached I am to this device, like I was as worried about getting my phone charged and feel as dependent on it as food or water 🙃 -
Grateful to be at #AMRO26 @servus - so far I've been inspired to boil a data centre by the morning talks, and learnt about batteries, energy use and power (in many senses of the word!) at @dasha and @marieverdeil 's workshop

My partner has been building a hi-fi system over the past year - he's been putting together a party in #Bristol inspired by the Loft, Paradise Garage, Lucky Cloud and Italy's Last Note.
He's also built maybe one of the best websites I've ever encountered 🥝
Our next party is June 14th and is definitely one for the dancers 🎵
