  1. "Coffee, black, big as you got." the tall man in a suit ordered with a voice that sounded like it was used to get what it asked for.

When he had come in, he had looked around in surprise. The small café was cleaner than he had thought it would be, warmer too.

"You want a cookie with that?" the barista asked. With... mirth?. At five in the morning, that's just wrong. They were one of those. Tatoos, piercings, weird hair and clothes, where you get all confused about what to call them.

"I told you what I want." he grumbled, but he respected the hustle.

"I think you told me what you usually get." the pixie behind the counter said. "Let's do this: I make you something; if you don't like it, you get your coffee free; otherwise, it's double."

"I don't play ga..." the man began, then stopped. Maybe the warmth had boiled him soft, or the damn delicious smells had poisoned him, but he relented with a soft sigh. "Do your thing."

He had expected a fancy showing, a frothing of liquids, some spectacle to sell him, but nary a minute later, the drink that stood on the counter looked suspiciously like a tall, black coffee. He sipped, and his eyes widened.

    "Wha...?" was all he managed.

"The magic of the orange zest." the pixie grinned and rang up a ridiculous but worthwhile price.

  2. What's Down There?

Looking down from a mountain once you've made it up there is part of the fun.

  4. The new guy didn't know. He was young, and there was still some spark left in him, which made it hard, but it had to be.

Truce. That's the one rule behind the train station everyone tells you about. The badly insulated wall of the boiler room keeps the cold bearable, and the roof is tight enough to keep you dry, so we huddle up and endure each other, and get drunk, and sometimes forget who we are and laugh.

The other rule, the one that is only whispered about, the one that is arguably more important, is: No one gets on the midnight train. When you ask why you get looks or shrugs but nothing else, maybe you learn its nickname: the fright train. We're a clever bunch like that.

And then there's the unspoken rule. The rule you learn by shutting up and watching long enough. Someone has to get on the midnight train. Sometimes. When we get too friendly, when we share our food and booze with someone new, you chip in. You offer a snack or some weed, and let us do the talking.

  5. Same But Different.

There are a million images like this on the internet, but this one is mine. My toes were cold and my elbows were wet because I wanted to prop up on a snowy rock.

  7. It's been a month of the MacBook crashing every couple of days. I am now shutting it down every evening, like a caveman.

I'm considering rolling back to macOS 26 (or selling the thing and learning the Reaper DAW).

When I put Linux on a laptop, I'm doing that to myself, being subjected to this bullshit by one of the richest companies in the world is bullshit.

  8. So Much More.

I love this snapshot with the mountains in the distance being framed by clouds; it looks magical to me.

  10. 'DO! NOT! SPLICE!' the small label on the vial stated aggressively. Atreś twirled it between his fingers, watching the small drops of blood caught in it dance.

Granted, he had just spent the better part of a day breaking into the safe after they had to fight their way here in the first place, but if the sample had not been destroyed, it could not be too bad, could it?

He eyed his splice port warily, then gestured towards Getrek. "Let's split the loot!" he shouted, waving the vial.
