@ashleygjovik Your paper makes *crucially* important points about how transparency in #DecisionMaking (even without a participatory component) is at the core of the #ClimateEmergency and other major problems facing society, and how ethical actions can be effective. Procedural delay+misrepresentation+hiding information are ineffective in Debian, Wikipedia, FOSS. Making them ineffective in universities and other institutions is doable.

#thankyouforsharingI wasn’t aware of the this topic at all. The idea that whistleblower complaints are routinely denied had not occurred to me.

My 12/29/23 #NLRB charge has been docketed. 🎉
One of Apple's lawyers emailed me this week to tell me she doesn't think she violated the #NLRA, and I was like, oh sweet baby, you're going to have to explain that to the federal investigator now, not to me.

@ashleygjovik The National Labor Relations Board has determined that Apple’s work and confidentiality rules “interfere with, restrain or coerce employees” from collective action and violated workers' rights.
The finding came in response to charges brought in 2021 by two former Apple employees, Ashley Gjovik, an engineering program manager at Apple for six years, and Cher Scarlett, an engineer on the company’s security team. Both women were involved in the activist group called #AppleToo that was collecting accounts of abuse, harassment and retaliation at the company.
#AppleToo members shared a belief that the company’s strict culture of secrecy discouraged workers from airing concerns about problems at work with each other, family or the media. As a result, they said, problematic managers went unchecked and the company’s business conduct was seldom questioned.
In their claims to the labor board, the former Apple employees accused the company of trying to prevent the group from collecting wage data from employees, including through harassment. They also said that the company’s work rules prevented them from discussing wages, hours and conditions of employment.
