Known also as Senbon Shaka-dō (千本釈迦堂) and Kitano Shaka-dō (北野釈迦堂), Daihōon-ji's (大報恩寺) main hall was constructed in 1227 and is a national treasure.
It's the oldest surviving building within the old city limits. -
During a Bodhi Day memorial at Daihōon-ji (大報恩寺) in the Kamakura period it is recorded that the temple's 3rd abbot, Jizen (慈禅上人), took 4 radishes, cut them in half and drew the Sanskrit character for 'Buddha' on each end as a prayer for good health.

Daikon-daki coincides with the day Buddha reached enlightenment.
A monk from the temple called Jizen (慈禅上人), living some time in the Kamakura period, would draw the Sanskrit character for 'Buddha' on the end of radishes and distribute them as a prayer for good health.Although many temples host 'daikon-daki' festivals throughout the winter, the origin of each celebration differs from place to place.

On December 7th and 8th about 5000 radishes are cooked and 10,000 meals consumed during Senbon Shaka-dō's 'Radish Boiling Festival' (大根焚 'Daikon-daki').
There are many theories about the symbolism of the radish...one suggests the cross-section resembles a mirror, a symbol of enlightenment (December 8th is the date Buddha reached Nirvana).
